On Wednesday morning, Ecuadorian soccer player Gonzalo Plata, who was over twice the legal alcohol limit, crashed his car into a taxi and overturned it.

Gonzalo Plata, Real Valladolid player, was involved in a car accident this morning at around 6:45 a.m. in the center of Valladolid. Plata hit a taxi and overturned it, as seen in the video. The police did the required alcohol test and Plata was over twice the legal limit (0.60). Plata, the taxi driver, and the passenger in the taxi all suffered minor injuries.

Real Valladolid condemn Plata's actions

The speed limit where Plata was driving is 30 km/hour. It’s not known exactly how fast he was driving when the accident occurred, but the passenger of the taxi was thrown from the vehicle and the driver himself had to be extracted through the window of the car. Both were taken to the hospital but are not seriously injured. It’s also been reported that Plata was with another person in the car, Vicente Jaime, an Ecuadorian soccer player who was trying out at Numancia.

The club Real Valladolid published a statement condemning Plata's behavior. They’ve announced that they will enact the “appropriate disciplinary measures” once they have all of the information about what happened, recalling the club’s Code of Conduct, which has strict policies against this type of issue. They have said they “regret” the injuries suffered by the people involved in the accident.

“We take this opportunity to be reminded of the dangers involved in recklessness, alcohol consumption, other substance abuses, distractions and, in short, driving without paying attention to or having respect for the rules, as well as the unequivocal commitment of the Club to preserve its basic principles and values .”
