Vinícius Junior played his 100th Liga game for Real Madrid against Cádiz on Sunday evening at the Santiago Bernabéu. The Brazilian forward made his debut for Madrid following his arrival from Flamengo, playing three minutes of the Madrid derby against Atlético in 2018. A week ago, Vinícius was again involved against Diego Simeone’s side, but this time as an undisputed starter for Carlo Ancelotti’s side and an emerging star having enjoyed his breakout season at Madrid. Two assists against Atlético took his domestic tally for the season to five, with 10 goals in 17 Liga appearances.

Such has been Vinícius’ influence this season that he has become one of LaLiga’s most-fouled players, drawing 40 across those 17 games compared to 53 in 35 last season. In the Clásico against Barcelona, he was fouled six times and during Madrid’s last nine games he has been on the end of 23 illegal tackles.

Ancelotti has unlocked Vinícius' potential

After a difficult start to his Madrid career, Vinícius has grown to become one of the most side’s most important players and his presence on the pitch is now guaranteed: after scoring twice against Levante in Week 2 of Liga action, he has started 15 consecutive games. Over the course of his previous three campaigns at Madrid, he only started 18.

“I think I have improved in many aspects,” Vinícius said in an interview with Real Madrid’s official website. But more than anything in the calmness in my game. I am doing everything with a cooler head and with more quality.”
