49ers 17 vs. 20 Titans summary: stats, scores and highlights | NFL Week 16

The Tennessee Titans needed a second half comeback after a dismal first two quarters. A.J. Brown had a triumphant return in the Titans 20-17 win.

The Tennessee Titans stopped the skidding and came up with a long sought after quality win against the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday night. A.J. Brown was back to his best after missing over a month due to a chest injury.

Brown balls in return

Brown went for 145 yards on 11 catches in his first game back in action. There were moments in the second half that the Titans receiver looked unstoppable, while Tennessee QB Ryan Tannehill looked more than happy to have his favorite target back in service.

The Titans has a dreadful first half in which they could do nothing right on the offensive end. The only saving grace for the home side was their defense’s ability to come up with big play after big play, limiting the damage to a 10-0 halftime deficit.

San Francisco came out and executed their opening drive of the game perfectly. After nine plays and 75 yards Jeff Wilson punched in a one yard touchdown run for the games first lead.

Jenkins with the play of the game

The Niners were inside the Titans 10 yard line on their next drive, but Janoris Jenkins came up with the play of the game ash the end of the first quarter. Jimmy Garoppolo looked for tight end George Kittle in the endzone, but Jekins came up with the interception in the endzone to keep the score at 7-0.

Another Robbie Gould field goal stretched the lead to 10-0 going into half, but the Niners went to the break knowing they had let the Titans slip off the hook on a couple drives. Tennessee could have easily been down two or three touchdowns.

Turn of the tables in the second half

In the first half, the Titans had less than 60 yards of total offense, but Tennessee looked like a revived team in the second half. While they still struggled to pick up yardage on first and second down due to a decimated run game, Ryan Tannehill completed third down after third down, most of the came 3rd and 8 or longer. Every time the Titans needed a big play it was A.J. Brown there to come up with a big catch.

Much of the talk over course of the last month has been around Tennessee’s struggles in the rushing game without Derrick Henry, but the last few week have proved how valuable Brown is to the Titans success.

Hooker's pick propelled Titans

The opening drive of the second half only amounted to a field goal, but Amani Hooker intercepted Jimmy G’s next throw to set up the first touchdown drive for the Titans. Four plays later D’Onta Foreman had a short rushing touchdown to even the game at 10-10.

Nissan Stadium came to life, and the Titans responded by holding the Niners on 4th and 6 around midfield. Tannehill and Brown wasted no time linking up for a total of three times on the next drive. The last hook up between the two went 18 yards for a touchdown, and the first Titans lead of the game.

Just when all seemed lost for the 49ers they went on a 95 yard march down the field two tie the game at 17-17. Garoppolo hit Brandon Ayiuk in the back of the endzone for a two yard touchdown pass with 2:20 to go in the game.

Tannehill leads forth game winning drive of year

That would wind up being exactly how much time Tennessee needed to set up a game winning field goal attempt from Randy Bullock to cap the game as time ran out.

Tannehill went 22/29 with 209 yards and a touchdown, using Brown for nearly three fourths of his yards in the win.

The Titans will now have to wait to see what the rest of the AFC division leaders do, and what the Indianapolis Colts do this weekend. If things go right for the Titans they could clinch the division and be the leaders in the race for home field.

The Niners drop to 8-7, but will still be right in the mix of the Wild Card spots that are up for grabs in the NFC.

Is there anyone in the league with more swag than A.J. Brown?

Titans ball from the SF 45 yard line.

The Titans drive yet again comes to a half, which is bad news for them. Worse news for them is they give the ball back to the Niners with 4:37 to go in the second quarter. That's a whole lot of time to give Jimmy G and the Niners who have been moving and grooving

San Fran takes over with great field position after the punt. They start at the 38 and the way the Niners have been moving the ball they'll be in the redzone in now time.

End of 1st Q

This Niners defense looks like it hasn't eaten all day. They are feasting on the Titans and just stopped Brown's jet sweep on 3rd and 3. TEN will punt to start the 2nd quarter.

A look at the playoff picture

If the season ended today the San Francisco 49ers would wrap up the second of three Wild Card spots in the NFC. At 8-6 they have a one game lead over the Minnesota Vikings who have the final spot in the playoffs at 7-7. The Saints and the Eagles are also 7-7, but lose out on tie breakers. Washington and Atlanta are also in the mix at 6-8. At the moment the only teams in the NFC mathematically out of the playoff hunt are the Detrioit Lions and the Chicago Bears.

San Fran surging

San Fran is coming off of a convincing 31-13 win over the Atlanta Falcons to make it five wins in their last six games. They are 8-6 after starting the season off losing four of their first six games. Kyle Shannahan and the Niners have righted the ship and then some.

King Henry close to a comeback

Losing Derrick Henry didn’t help the Titans cause at all. King Henry was on track for another 2,000 yard season and was a potential MVP candidate before having to be operated on after the Colts game in late October. Reports are Henry could be back in Week 18.

Tennessee falling quickly

The Titans have been in a month long free fall, losing three of their last four after an 8-2 start to the season. Tennessee is coming off of a 19-13 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers that kept them from taking the outright lead in the conference. A win would have put the Titans in pole position for home field advantage, as it stands they still lead the AFC South by a game over the Indianapolis Colts.

Playoff position on the line

Hello everyone and welcome to the start of Week 16 where just one team has clinched a playoff spot with just three weeks left in the regular. Neither team can wrap up a ticket to the playoffs, but a loss will complicate the final few weeks for the losing team.

Niners vs. Titans

The San Francisco 49ers hit the road and travel east to take on the Tennessee Titans with both teams desperately needing a win to stay in playoff position. AS English will be with you all night long with live scores, stats, updates and analysis from tonight’s primetime matchup from Nissan Stadium.
