Legendary football coach and broadcaster John Madden has passed away at the age of 85. Madden serenaded NFL audiences for over three decades as a pioneer broadcaster and won a Super Bowl with the Oakland Raiders as a coach.

Madden passed unexpectedly on Tuesday morning, and no cause of death has been released.

He was most known for his easy access explanations of the game while combining catchphrases and charisma to each and every broadcast. He also coached the Oakland Raiders for a decade through the 60’s and 70’s with a record of 103-32-7. His win percentage of .759 remains tops for any coach with more than 100 games on the sidelines.

Madden was the face of the NFL for nearly half of a century

An icon in the world of sport media, Madden was also famous world wide for being the face, namesake and voice of one of the most influencial video games of all time. The first edition of “John Madden Football” came out in 1988, and new versions “Madden” continue to be released on a yearly basis.

Madden was one of the trailblazers of football. He was there for every step of the way as football became the most popular sport in the country, and the NFL one of the biggest buisnesses in the world.

A documentary dedicated to the irreplaceable John Madden came out of Fox on Christmas Day. After the New Year “All Madden” will available on a number of streaming platforms including ESPN+, Tubi and Peacock.
