NFL free agency: The top stars still on the market as 2026 training camps kick off

Helmets are out, shoulder pads are on, and NFL training camps are officially open.

While hundreds of players report to fight for a 53-man roster spot, a elite group of free agents is watching from afar. These aren’t aging fringe players—they are recent Pro Bowlers and Super Bowl champions capable of altering the trajectory of any franchise.

Despite unprecedented offseason spending, the 2026 free-agent market is still stacked with game-changing talent. Now, as coaches evaluate rosters and early pre-season injuries mount, the phone is about to ring for several high-profile veterans.

Stefon Diggs: The most coveted wide receiver on the market

If there is one name dominating the list of remaining free agents, it is Stefon Diggs.

The receiver is coming off a Super Bowl appearance with the Patriots, proving he remains a premier target for any quarterback. During the 2025 season, Diggs hauled in 85 receptions for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns.

However, New England chose to release him as his salary cap hit was set to jump from $10.5 million to $26.5 million.

His lingering availability on the open market was also shaped by legal uncertainty. Diggs faced strangulation and assault charges filed by a chef who lived with him. In May, he was found not guilty, and the NFL subsequently concluded there were no grounds to issue a suspension under its personal conduct policy.

With his legal situation resolved, the four-time Pro Bowler represents easily the top option available for any team looking to upgrade its receiving corps.

Tyreek Hill: A high-risk gamble

Rarely does a player with Tyreek Hill’s game-breaking talent remain unsigned at this point in the year.

The primary hurdle is medical. The explosive wideout continues to rehab from a severe knee injury that cut his season short. Hill himself recently shared footage of his recovery process as he works to regain full strength in his left leg.

When healthy, few players change a game like he does. His speed forces entire defensive schemes to be adjusted and turns any short pass into a scoring threat. But we still don’t know how long it will take him to return to the level that made him a five-time All-Pro.

Deebo Samuel and Keenan Allen

For teams seeking immediate, proven production, Deebo Samuel and Keenan Allen remain highly compelling options.

Samuel contributed 727 total yards and six touchdowns for the Commanders in 2025. His versatility remains his greatest asset, as he can line up as a wideout, backfield threat, or weapon in gadget packages.

Allen, meanwhile, showed he can still produce consistently by hauling in 81 receptions for 777 yards with the Chargers. His elite route-running precision continues to rank among the best in the league.

Defense Awaits Offers as Well

The remaining talent isn’t limited to the offensive side of the ball. Bobby Wagner continues to defy Father Time. At 36 years old, he earned Second-Team All-Pro honors after racking up 162 tackles with Washington—proof that his leadership and ability to command a defense remain fully intact.

Joey Bosa also remains on the market after recording five sacks and leading the NFL with five forced fumbles during his stint with the Bills. While injuries have tempered his market value, his ability to generate edge pressure remains a highly sought-after commodity.

Teams with the most cap space

The continued availability of these marquee free agents aligns with several franchises still holding significant financial flexibility.

The 49ers lead the league with over $71 million in available salary cap space, followed by the Titans at $53 million and the Commanders at nearly $44 million.

That extra cap room positions those franchises as logical candidates to make moves as August progresses and early camp injuries force teams to plug key roster holes. In the NFL, free agency rarely ends when training camp begins.
