Real Madrid: Marcelo innundated with offers

The Real Madrid left-back will be moving on in the summer. He has received offers from back home in Brazil and from clubs in Turkey.

Update:
Real Madrid: Marcelo innundated with offers
AHMED YOSRIREUTERS

It's been a long while now since Marcelo lost his starting place at Real Madrid. Férland Mendy has been the first-choice at left-back since last season with the Brazilian now in the final year of his contract and with a bit part in Aneclotti's set-up. This season he has totalled just 274 minutes of playing time spread over seven games, most recently in the Copa del Rey. On 30 June, Marcelo will be bidding farewell to the club where he has spent the past 16 seasons and in the meantime he will be looking for a new club. Up until recently, most of the interest in the defender has come from his homeland - Fluminense, Botafogo and Palmeiras figure on the list of possible destinations. David Beckham's Inter Miami was also rumoured to be interested last year and now Turkey has joined the queue.

According to 61saat, Trabzonspor contacted Marcelo's agents to announce their interest in signing him. They are willing to offer an annual salary of 2.5 million euros, but the player sent a clear message back. "We now thinking about Turkey - for now". Trabzonspor's plan was to sign in the current transfer window but Marcelo has other reasons to see out the remainder of his contract with Madrid. He has an exceptional chance to become the player with the most honours in Madrid's history - at the moment, he is one trophy away from equalling the 23 trophies which Paco Gento won during his time at the Bernabéu. With Madrid currently top of the table with a five-point lead over their nearest rivals, there's no reason for Marcelo to leave now.

A move to Turkey at the end of the season isn't entirely ruled out but Marcelo explained after his last appearance, against Alcoyano in the Cup, "I've always given the best I have to give since the day I arrived at this club.I'm going to continue until my contract runs out, I owe a lot to this club and I am going to continue giving my all right to the very end".

Joining Trabzonspor could be an attractive move for the 33-year-old. The team are currently leaders of the Turkish Super Lig with a seven-point advantage over Konyaspor, 13 points ahead of Basaksehir and 14 sobre ahead of Fenerbahçe - the club which Marcelo's predecessor Roberto Carlos joined after leaving Real Madrid in 2007.

Marcelo's final months at Real Madrid

Ancelotti has used Marcelo sparingly this season. The defender has started just two games - against Elche in Week 12 and against Alcoyano in the Cup. With Mendy settled and David Alaba able to cover at left-back, it is difficult to see Marcelo getting many opportunities between now and May - unless Madrid are capable of wrapping up the league early.

One thing's for sure, the club will give him the kind of send-off he deserves. Marcelo is the second foreign player to have made the most appearances for Real Madrid in history behind Karim Benzema. He has no shortage of options when the time comes to move on from Madrid and maybe continue playing for a couple of seasons, Could he follow in Roberto Carlos' footsteps, or try his luck back home in Brazil? Time will tell.
