Alcoyano 1-3 Real Madrid: as it happened

Alcoyano were unable to cause another Copa del Rey upset and Real Madrid run out 3-1 winners at El Collao.

FT: Alcoyano 1-3 Real Madrid

92

Lillo launches a long ball into the box. Militao, who has been outstanding, clears it out for a corner.

89

There will be four minutes added on at the end of the 90.

89

Alcoyano can be proud of their effort today. They got themselves back into the game with a fine goal by Dani Vega but two goals in two minutes look to have won this one for Madrid.

83

Javi Antón drives a low effort to Lunin's left. The backup keeper gets down well to deny the home side a second goal.

82

Dani Ceballos is about to come on for his first game for Madrid since 2019.

Marcelo crosses the ball into the box before a mix-up takes place between Alcoyano's centre-backs. The loose ball falls to Isco and as he clashes with José Juan in goal, the ball bounces off Isco and rolls into the net.

78

Isco adds another!

Isco, who is only on the pitch, has doubled Madrid's lead!

76

Asensio puts Madrid back in front

Marco Asensio has given Madrid the lead once again. His shot from the edge of the box comes off Raúl González and ends up wrongfooting José Juan before flying into the net.

75

Isco and Kroos are warming up for Real Madrid.

74

Valverde shoots from the edge of the box. It takes a deflection off Raúl but the referee says no to the Uruguayan's requests for a corner.

71

José Juan saves Camavinga's header from Asensio's corner.

Just less than a year ago, Alcoyano famously dumped Los Blancos out of the Cup at the same stage, beating their illustrious opponents 2-1 in extra time.

68

Well, Alcoyano beat Levante in the previous round. Can they beat another LaLiga side to advance to the last 16 of the Copa del Rey?

Dani Vega cuts back onto his left after beating Casemiro and curls a left-footed strike past Lunin. It flies into the far top corner.

Alcoyano equalise!

It's 1-1 at El Collao!

66

Dani Vega scores!

What a strike by Dani Vega!!!

64

It's David Alaba again. He works a yard for himself before unleashing a low left-footed drive from 20 yards. It's well wide of José Juan's left-hand post.

62

If the home side can find an equaliser, this game will go to extra time!

Triple change for Alcoyano

57

Camavinga picks up a yellow card. It looked quite soft. He barely pushes Fran Miranda but the referee thinks differently.

56

Alcoyano are preparing to make three changes as they look for the all-important equaliser.

55

Lunin, under pressure from Mourad, kicks the ball into touch.

53

Madrid send a couple of more subs out for a run and stretch. Ancelotti will likely make more changes as time runs on.

51

Alaba strikes!

Madrid play the free-kick short to Alaba. The Austrian international shoots with his preferred left foot but can't keep the 25-yard effort on target.

49

Hazard has taken up a false 9 position, with Asensio operating off the right.

48

Mariano has picked up an injury and Madrid send Asensio straight in with 48 minutes on the clock.

47

Marco Asensio is coming on for Mariano.

If you're only joining us now, Madrid are winning 1-0 thanks to a first half header from Militao.

Alcoyano get us underway for the second half!

The players are making their way out for the second half.

HT: Alcoyano 0-1 Real Madrid

44

Mourad controls the ball on the edge of the box, before blasting over the bar. Antón did well to cross from the right.

43

Nacho tries an acrobatic overhead kick in the box but it's an easy one for the Alcoyano keeper.

39

Militao gives Madrid the lead!

Eder Militao scores from a corner to put Madrid ahead before the break. The centre-back back is all alone and stoops in front of José Juan to head home Rodrygo's inswinging corner.

36

Madrid winger Rodrygo is next to try his luck from distance. His low shot goes past José Juan's post.

34

Carlos Blanco shoots!

It's an ambitious effort from 35 yards. The ball is bouncing in front of Lunin but the keeper manages to tip it out for a corner. Lunin then grabs the resulting corner.

32

Real Madrid have been sluggish so far, and look far from league leaders, but it is still very early.

30

Antón finds himself in space on the right wing. His dipping cross-cum-shot flies just past Lunin's crossbar. It remains 0-0 with a half an hour played.

Earlier today in the Copa del Rey, Barcelona avoided a cup upset by coming back from 1-0 down to beat third-tier side Linares 2-1, with second half goals from Jutgla and Dembélé.

Lunin will be looking to impress tonight, although Thibaut Courtois is unlikely to lose his place as the club's number one shot-stopper anytime soon.

25

Marcelo takes out Antón and avoids picking up a yellow card. Alcoyano have a free kick on the right-hand side of the box. Lunin comes out and punches the cross away.

24

Lunin kicks the ball straight out of play and the home side have possession once again in their own half.

22

Carlos Blanco stops Mariano!

The defender stands up tall to block an effort by Mariano from the edge of the box. With his hands behind his back, he took no chances.

18

The main difference between this year's clash between these two sides is that fans are back. The home faithful missed last year's historic cup win over Madrid due to covid-19.

15

Andy hits the side-netting!

The home side's number 10 drops the shoulder to beat Casemiro in the box before slamming his strike into Lunin's side-netting. 0-0

14

Mariano looks to lob a ball over the Alcoyano defence for Hazard but it's well read and cleared.

12

Alcoyano boss Vicente Parras barks instructions to his players. It's a tight ground and one where you can hear every single message from coaches to players. Parras will be pleased with his side's performance so far.

9

Nacho clears the loose ball from Alcoyano's cross.

8

Rodrygo takes a free-kick out on the right but it evades everyone in the box. The camera pans to the Madrid dugout, where Carlo Ancelotti looks quite relaxed with his packet of chewing gum.

5

It has been end to end and we're only five minutes in!

4

Dani Vega shoots!

Lunin tips the effort over the bar. Alcoyano's corner is driven into the box. Camavinga heads a close range effort off the line! Madrid get away with that one.

3

Mariano finds himself one on one with José Juan in the Alcoyano goal but he's flagged for offside.

2

Carbonell does well to block Rodrygo's cross after a good run by the Brazilian down the right.

The notable absentees from tonight's XI are Courtois, Modric, Vinicius and Benzema.

Real Madrid are playing from right to left as we watch it. Ancelotti has picked a pretty strong side for this Copa del Rey round of 32 fixture.

Real Madrid get us underway!

The players are in the tunnel at El Collao.

Kick-off is coming right up!

Nacho starts for Madrid

Kick-off in Alcoy is just 15 minutes away!

Hazard starts for Real Madrid

Carlo Ancelotti has named his team for tonight's Copa del Rey match against third-tier side Alcoyano. Eden Hazard starts in attack for Madrid. Marcelo captains the side, with Mariano leading the line for Los Blancos.

Just under a year ago, this happened...

Who are Alcoyano?

Alcoyano are based in the city of Alcoy, in the Alicante region of Spain. They play in the third tier of Spanish football.

Vicente Parras’ team have already been on a bit of a giant-killing spree this season, having eliminated Levante in the last round in a thrilling, six-goal encounter that was decided from the penalty spot.

With Ancelotti’s team visiting, there is the prospect of another magical Cup night at El Collao and Alcoyano would love nothing more than to add the 19-time winners to their list of scalps.

Real Madrid: Ancelotti's plans for the squad in 2022/23

At Real Madrid, the strengths and weaknesses of Carlo Ancelotti’s squad have been identified and a roadmap for next season set out. Ancelotti himself said so publicly ahead of Madrid’s Copa del Rey clash with Alcoyano on Wednesday, telling reporters: “We’ve made our plans for next term.” It was a comment made almost in passing, but behind it is a blueprint devised by a club working with its sights set not months, but years down the line.

Ahead of 2022/23, Madrid’s transfer to-do list looks like this: seal a deal for Kylian Mbappé, who is out of contract at Paris Saint-Germain in June; take up the best possible position in the race for Erling Braut Haaland; fill the gaps that will be left by close-season departures, and keep a close eye on the other free agents on the club’s radar.
