Both Senegal and Guinea started their AFCON campaigns with wins in their Group B opening matches with the winner from Friday's clash guaranteeing a place in the next round as Liverpool team-mates Sadio Mane and Naby Kieta go head-to-head.

'Reds' striker Mane converted a stoppage time penalty as Senegal grabbed a unconvincing 1-0 win over Zimbabwe in Group B and the performance was for from a statement of intent from the heavyweight contenders, who were one of the highly fancied sides going into the tournament.

Guinea secure slender opening day win

Guinea too got off to a winning but unconvincing start at the Africa Cup of Nations as they edged past Malawi with a 1-0 win on Monday.

A stylish goal from Issiaga Sylla was enough to seal the points, but they were made to work hard by a side playing at just the third finals in their history.

Indeed, it was Malawi who had by far the better of the early chances and would have gone ahead through Yamikani Chester. Guinea took greater control in a second half short on chances as they took a positive step towards qualifying from Group B.

Senegal say Sarr may play in AFCON

Watford midfielder Ismaila Sarr could yet be able to play for Senegal in the Africa Cup of Nations finals after a 'positive development' in medical checkups on his injured knee, the Senegal Football Federation said on Wednesday.

Sarr, injured in a Premier League match against Manchester United in November, was reluctantly released by Watford after being called up by his country for the tournament in Cameroon.

"Sarr is currently in Barcelona for previously planned medical check-ups to examine his injury. These reviews have resulted in a positive development," said a statement from the Senegal Football Federation.

Paris St Germain midfielder Idrissa Gueye and AC Milan left back Fode Ballo-Toure tested positive and will miss the game against Guinea with Saliou Ciss, Pape Matar Sarr and Nampalis Mendy set to retyurn from covid enforced absence for the 'Lions from Teranga'.
