Senegal vs Guinea summary: score, goals, highlights, AFCON 2021
Thanks for joining us today for the latest AFCON clash in what was ultimately a rather uneventful game from the Kouekang stadium
Far from a classic in Bafoussam as both Senegal and Guinea share the spoils with the point surely enough to see both West African nations progress to the Round of 16.
Last minute and one senses both sides are happy with the result as the whistle sounds.
Goals still very much at a premium at AFCON 21.... only Cameroon seem to have brought their shooting boots !
We'll have three minutes of added time.
Senegal sub: Balde replaced by Sarr
Morlaye Sylla(in) - Morgan Guilavogui(out) (Guinea)
A point a piece for Syli Nationale and Senegal should see both teams through to the round of 16
Conte shoots but his effort is poor as have been the free kicks today from both sides.
Guinea win a dangerous free on the edge as a Senegal man bundles over his opponent.
Into the last five minutes of normal time. The game has swung in waves with Guinea the better side in the first half. Senegal stared strongly in the second period and Guinea are enjoying the better of the past ten minutes or so.
Appeals for a penalty from Guinea as Keita crashes on the edge of the area and the referee is not interested in the appeal.
Card for keeper Keita for time wasting
Poor strike as Sarr drives high and wide
Another switch for Senegal as Dia is replaced by Lopy
Card for Sylla as Senegal win a dangerous free on the edge of the Guinea box
Change for Guinea as no. 24 Konate replaces Diawara
Just over ten minutes remain and difficult to see where the goal will come from now as Senegal's wave of pressure seems to have abated.
Cheikhou Kouyaté carded for a rash challenge
Change for Senegal as No. 11 Diallo replaces Thiam
Into the final 20 minutes of action... Malwai vs Zimbabwe next up in Group B later this evening.
Not sure if more fans were allowed n at the interval but the ground now doesn't look as empty as it did pre-kick-off.
Time for a 70' water break
Mané looks for Dia now and the Villarreal man just unable to get a touch on the ball and steer it goalbound.
Possession: Senegal 50-50 Guinea (%)
Sarr goes inches wide with his shot fizzing by the Guinea post. Senegal pressing and getting closer to the opening goal now.
Change for Guinea as Conte comes on for Iilax Moriba. Not a classic performance from the former Barça man.
Naby Keita carded and ironically applauds the ref. He initially clippped his Liverpool team-mate Mane
Keita and Thiam have cross words after a challenge in the Guinea box. The men in red being totally pegged back inside their own half now as the second half has seen a new revived Senegal.
Senegal with a totally different proposition now as the press Guinea back ... this is more of what we expected from the West African side.
Diallo almost finds the net but the Guinea keeper tips over his headed effort. Better from the Lions of Teranga now.
Senegal upping the tempo ever so slightly now as Aliou Cisse bellows instructions from the bench. Decent header from Mané from a Sarr free but the Liverpool man steers the ball wide.
Amadou Diawara (Guinea) carded for a lunge
Guinea almost find the net as once again Morgan Guilavogui was at the heart of the action...
All set for the second half with Syli Nationale starting the action
The teams return to the pitch... Senegal were first out ...
It's been far from a classing here in Bafoussam with Senegal are real conundrum. The 'Lions of Teranga' were touted by many as pre-tournament favourites and in both games have really been underwhelming.
The whistle sounds and the players head to the dressing room for a break.
We'll have one minute of additional time
Issiaga Sylla has an effort as the ball drops nicely to the Toulouse man who blazes well over
Guinea's Naby Keita and Issiaga Sylla have been the standout players of the game today at the Koueking Stadium
Into the final five minutes of action and it's certainly Guinea who have enjoyed the bulk of the ball and indeed created the better chances of the afternoon.
Senegal win another dangerous freekick on the left hand side of the Guinea box. Cisse takes the free and the ball is deflected wide for a corner.
How did that not go in for Guinea as the Syli Nationale have men over as they counter with pace. Morgan Guilavogui who it was with the great chance to open the scoring but where were the defenders as Guinea had men over....
Drifting towards the 30 minute mark and Guinea it has to be said have been the better side in this contest so far.
Guinea go close as Sylla drives the ball goal bound but the ball ricochets off a man in white for a corner for the Syli Nationale
Senegal win a corner as Mane sees a Guinean defender avert the danger. Not a great corner as the ball drifts wide for a goal-kick for the men in red.
Naby Keita takes a blow to the nose and will need to leave the pitch to be attended to
Neither keeper has really been rested yet as we reach the 20 minute mark.
Senegal starting to ease their way into the action following a slow start for the 'Lions from Teranga'
Mané drills the ball straight into the wall and Guinea manager to clear the danger.
Senegal win a dangerous free, the ball is placed just outside the box as Keta organizes his wall. Mane fouled by Conte.
Kieta is called into action in the Guinea goal and Ostersund stopper is alert to snatch the ball.
Looking forward to seeing former FC Barcelona man Ilaix Moriba in action today. The current RB Leipzig is on freekick duty but drills the ball high and wide.
Senegal with nothing resembling any possession in this opening spell as they seem happy to concede the ball back to the men in red.
Decent start from Guinea as the 'Syli Nationale' start well and pen Senegal deep inside their own half.
Group B features: Senegal, Guinea, Zimbabwe and Malawi .... just a reminder that the top two sides from each group plus the fourth best runners-up advance to the Round of 16.
Senegal in all white with Guinea in red shirts and yellow shorts. We're all set in Bafoussam as the ref. sounds his whistle and off we go.
National anthem time with first up that of Senegal. Followed by the national anthem of Guinea 'Liberte'
Once again a few sparse attendance at the Kouekong Stadium today with small group of supporters from both nations but swathes of empty seats at the 20,000 capacity ground.
Senegal-Guinea confirmed teams
Klopp rues AFCON absentees
Jurgen Klopp does not believe there is any team that would not miss Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, after Liverpool felt the duo's absence against Arsenal.
Salah and Mane, along with midfielder Naby Keita, are on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Mane scored a last-gasp winner on Monday for Senegal against Zimbabwe, and he and Guinea's Keita go head-to-head when their nations face off today.
Salah, meanwhile, was kept quiet as Egypt slipped to a 1-0 loss to Nigeria in their opening group game. The forward, who has netted 23 times across all competitions this season for Liverpool, had just four touches in the opposition box and managed just one attempt, which did hit the target, in Monday's game.
Once again, the heat will be a factor for today's clash in Bafoussam with a current temperature of 29C-85F with kick-off just twenty minutes away. Zero probability of rainfall during the Group B game.
Two LaLiga stars get a start for Alio Cisse and his Senegal side as he retains faith with Villarreal striker Boulaye Dia who delivered a discreet performance in the game against Zimbabwe as Alaves central player Mamadou Loum earns his fourth cap for Senegal this afternoon.
Senegal XI
Guinea confirm starting XI
Pre-match: Kaba Diawara (Guinea)
"We are excited to be playing against Senegal in a derby. Senegal is a big team, and we don't expect an easy game, but we know nothing is impossible. We are determined to get three points, and I have urged the players to be vigilant as we want to avoid the mistakes we did against Malawi."
Pre-match: Aliou Cisse (Senegal)
"When Senegal play Guinea its always an exciting match, a derby to watch. Our aim is to win every game, but we have to remember they are equally very strong side. I have always told our players we have no small teams in the competition"
Mané rescues the 'Lions of Teranga' in opener
'Reds' striker Sadio Mané converted a stoppage time penalty as Senegal grabbed a unconvincing 1-0 win over Zimbabwe in Group B and the performance was for from a statement of intent from the heavyweight contenders, who were one of the highly fancied sides going into the tournament.
Both Senegal and Guinea started their AFCON campaigns with unconvincing 1-0 wins in their Group B opening matches with the winner from today's clash guaranteeing a place in the next round as Liverpool team-mates Sadio Mane and Naby Kieta go head-to-head.
The action at the 20,000 capacity Kouekang Stadium in Bafoussam gets underway at 14:00 CET/08:00 ET
