Djokovic's visa canceled again
The tennis star had his visa canceled again by the Minister for Immigration in Australia, threatening his chance to play in the Open starting on Monday.
Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic's visa was revoked previously, but the decision was reversed in court. Now, it has been canceled a second time just days before the Australian Open.
The Minister for Immigration, Alex Hawke, decided to cancel the visa, siting "health reasons". Djokovic is not currently vaccinated against Covid-19 and entered the country with a medical exemption, which was deemed invalid by border officials upon his arrival.
Australia has had some of the strictest lockdowns and is under some scrutiny for their strict policies. Hawke says that the government "is firmly committed to protecting Australia's borders, particularly in relation to the covid-19 pandemic."
The cancellation means that Djokovic would not be able to return to Australia for three years, which would ruin his chances at attending the Grand Slam. It's possible that Djokovic could still appeal in court.
