Amid calls for a boycott, more than 2000 athletes from all over the world will flock to Beijing to participate in the 2022 Winter Olympics which will be held from Feb. 4 to 20.

In just a matter of days, Beijing will become the first city to play host to both the Summer and the Winter Games.

New winter events

The competitors will be vying for medals in 109 events over 15 disciplines in seven sports. Seven of these events will make their debut in Beijing. Among the new additions are a few mixed team events, which are promoting the recent Olympic trend of putting men and women in joint contests.

Australia, Belgium, Britain, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Germany, Japan, and the United States have confirmed a diplomatic boycott of the Games. Although these countries are not sending country representatives to China, their athletes will still be competing in the events.

Some countries pass on sending officials

China’s human rights record has been cited as the main cause for participating in the diplomatic boycott. Other countries like Austria, New Zealand, Slovenia and Sweden have also said they will refrain from sending government representatives to Beijing, but they cited covid-19 concerns as their reason for doing so.

There will be 90 nations taking part in the Games, with Haiti and Saudi Arabia set to make their first appearance at the Winter Olympics. Kenya had one athlete who qualified for the Games, but later withdrew from the competition.
