Could Garoppolo's 49ers career be over after Rams defeat?

It was a tough one to take, but Jimmy Garoppolo's failure to get his San Francisco team into Super Bowl LVI may be his last involvement for them.

The night began positively for the San Francisco 49ers but ended so bitterly as Jimmy Garoppolo was picked off and the LA Rams celebrated a place in Super Bowl LVI against the Cincinnati Bengals on 13 February.

Oh, what could have been for the quarterback who has had rookie Trey Lance breathing down his neck, many Niners fans calling for the starter switch earlier in the season. That said, Jimmy G was on the verge of reaching the showpiece final. And this hit him hard.

Garoppolo's future away from 49ers?

"I think these next couple days, it'll really start to settle in a little bit. Emotions are high after a game, win or loss," the 30-year old said after the game. "It's one of those things you've got to be glad it happened. Just smile from it, think about the good things.

But one of the questions on everyone's lips was over his future. He wasn't giving too much away but enough for the doubts to remain.

"We'll see what happens in these next couple days, weeks, whatever. I love this team.

"Just the fight and the battle in this team throughout the entire year has been really impressive. And I love those guys."

"I love this team, I've said it before to you guys," he repeated once again with real emotion. "Just everything we've been through, starting with the offseason, into training camp. It was a roller coaster of a year, it really was. But we fought through it.

"Good teams, we were a resilient team, and that's what good teams do, you fight through things like that and come out better at the other end of it."

Would his head coach throw any more light on the subject? What do you think?

"I love Jimmy," Kyle Shanahan unsurprisingly began. "I'm not gonna sit here and make a farewell statement or anything right now. It's the last stuff on my mind.

"Jimmy has battled his ass off. He battled today. He did some unbelievable things today. I love coaching Jimmy."

The coach's words were echoed by another of the 49ers stars of the season, Deebo Samuel.

"I think Jimmy played very well... left it all out there," Samuel commented. "This team loves Jimmy to death, and we're all behind him."

So, it may not be crystal clear from the post-match words, but if I'm certainly expecting Lance to step up in the coming months. The next question is, where will Jimmy be playing next season?

Who is Jimmy Garoppolo?

Born in a suburb of Chicago, Illinois by the name of Arlington Heights in 1991, Garoppolo was actually on the path to becoming a professional baseball player. Though he did in fact play football in high school, it was baseball that had his focus initially as began to prove himself as an able pitcher. As it turns out, his arm proved just as skilled when he picked up a football and after a successful season for his high school, he attracted the attention of several colleges. In the end Eastern Illinois University is where he decided to ply his trade.

Though relatively small compared with other colleges, Garoppolo blossomed into a very good quarterback. Winning several awards, the young 'Jimmy G' would go on to actually break the school's record for career pass completions. A feat made all the more remarkable when we consider that the previous record holder, was none other than former Dallas Cowboys star Tony Romo. From there it was onto the NFL Draft of 2014 in which he was not highly rated, finally being drafted to the New England Patriots as the 62nd pick.

At the time head coach Bill Belichick was searching for a strong back up to star QB Tom Brady as well as a potential replacement for the future. Garoppolo would feature in six games in that first season - coming on when the Patriots were enjoying sizeable leads. Interestingly he actually linked with Rob Gronkowski for a touchdown on his very first drive. His rookie season would eventually see him win his first ring as they Patriots defeated the Seattle Seahawks in the Super Bowl.

While his time with the Patriots was not exemplary he did get limited opportunities, most notably during the Deflategate scandal which implicated Tom Brady. Once the dust settled, however, Brady returned and that was more or less that, where his career with the Patriots was concerned. In the end he was traded to the San Francisco 49ers during the 2017 season and became there starting quarterback, which he still is today.

What is Jimmy Garoppolo's net worth?

Where his off field success is concerned one could say that the quarterback has done quite well for himself. As of 2022 Jimmy Garoppolo's net worth stands at $27 million according to various news outlets as well as Celebrity Net Worth. While the majority of that figure comes from his sizeable contract with the 49ers - Garoppolo signed a five-year extension with the 49ers in February 2019 worth a reported $137.5 million - he also has varying endorsement deals with a number of brands.

Nike, Michael Jordan's brand, Bose, New Era and Men's Wearhouse are just a few of the brands that are known to have agreements with the quarterback. Garoppolo has also previously been seen modelling Levi's Jeans which would suggest the he also has a deal in place with the clothing brand.
