Real Madrid host Granada at the Bernabéu on Sunday with just one recognized striker in the squad and a cushion over pursuing Sevilla of just four points following the draw against Elche last time out and defeat at Getafe two weeks earlier, a game that brought an 11-game unbeaten run for Carlo Ancelotti’s side in LaLiga to a halt. Worryingly for Ancelotti and Madrid, the leaders have now dropped points in three of their last five and the hosts will be without Karim Benzema and Vinicius Junior on Sunday.

Real Madrid to pay for Benzema-Vinicius dependence?

Ancelotti has denied Madrid are reliant on the Frenchman and there is an element of truth to that, but only because the Brazilian has flourished so much under the tutelage of the Italian. Benzema has scored 24 in 28 games this season and Vinicius has chipped in with 15 in 31. Behind that is Marco Asensio with seven and Toni Kroos with three. Granada will fancy their chances of causing an upset if they can keep the Spain winger under wraps and prevent the German and Luka Modric from pulling the trigger around the edges of the area. The player likely to lead Madrid’s front line on Sunday, Luka Jovic, has managed one this season.

Granada have not been in decent form of late, losing two and drawing two of their last four and Robert Moreno hasn’t overseen a victory since before Christmas, when his side beat Atlético to cap a run of three wins in five. Their recent results have left Granada in 16th, a point ahead of Mallorca after the islanders’ 2-1 win over Cádiz on Saturday, and while their fellow Andalusians, Alavés and Levante are firm favourites for the drop, a result in the Bernabéu would provide a timely boost for the visitors.
