The Rams and the Bengals face off in the Super Bowl, offering glamour and stars on and off the field. Will the Bengals’ Cinderella season end with a bang?
Cinderella stories are pretty common in sports and the fans love them. Super Bowl LVI might turn out to be one of these, with the Cincinnati Bengals getting to the title game through the most improbable of journeys through the playoffs, wins over the Las Vegas Raiders and two huge upsets: they beat top seeded Tennessee and the big favorite to win the Super Bowl, Kansas City.
These surprising Bengals, in the hands of their young quarterback Joe Burrow, will be hoping to bring another surprise on Sunday, February 13 to SoFi Stadium, home of the Los Angeles Rams, who will be looking to become only the second team in history to win the Super Bowl in their own stadium (The Bucs did it last year).
Big stars, like in Hollywood, are overflowing on the four-point-favorite Rams’ roster. But this Cinderella story can have a different ending: the first NFL title for the Bengals. A perfect Hollywood-style ending.
Super Bowl LVI is atypical for several reasons, and one of these is the duel between the head coaches. This will mark the first Super Bowl in which both head coaches are under the age of 40: Sean McVay of the Rams is 36 and the Bengals’ Zac Taylor is 38.
Sean McVay
Sean McVay is living proof that experience isn’t lost with one’s youth. At only 36 years old, the Rams head coach is already in his fifth year and this will be his second trip to the Super Bowl.
In 2017, after three years as the Redskins’ offensive coordinator, he became the youngest head coach in the history of the NFL. His impact on the Rams was immediate. In his first season with the team, he broke a 12-year playoff drought, in his second season they made it to the Super Bowl, and in his tenure the Rams have won three NFC West titles.
After five years in Los Angeles, McVay has a 55-26 regular season record, 6-3 in the playoffs and is one win away from giving the Rams their first Super Bowl title since the 1999 season. Overall, the Rams are 1-3 in Super Bowl games.
Zac Taylor
38 year old Taylor was part of the New England Patriots’ coaching staff that handed McVay his loss in Super Bowl LIII. On the back of turning Jared Goff into a functional quarterback, the Bengals confided their trust in Taylor to rebuild their franchise after the Marvin Lewis era in Cincinnati. This is his first head coaching opportunity in the NFL.
Although his first two seasons in Paul Brown Stadium didn’t go well, with a total record of 6-25-1, the third one was the charm as Taylor brought the Bengals their first AFC North title since 2015.
Under their head coach, the Bengals broke a 31 year losing streak by winning a playoff game and this team has given the city the third Super Bowl in franchise history. Should they win, Taylor will be only the third head coach in history under the age of 40 to win the Super Bowl.
Despite playing host to the third-most Super Bowls (eight, including this one), this will be the first time since 1992 that Los Angeles has seen the big game. The reason? That was when the NFL instituted a rule stating that Super Bowls could not be hosted in cities that don’t have a team in the league. The departure of the Rams and Raiders in 1994 left Los Angeles on the sidelines for nearly three decades.
