Sporting Clube vs Manchester City: Champions League preview

Portuguese champions Sporting Clube welcome defending Premier League champions Manchester City to Lisbon's Estádio José Alvalade for the first leg of their Champions League Last 16 tie on Tuesday. After winning their first league title in 19 years, Sporting will be keen to make good use of the positive buzz surrounding the team and advance to the quarter finals for the first time. They have only reached this stage once before, in the 2008/9 edition only to be eliminated 12-1 on aggregate by the mighty Bayern Munich - their heaviest defeats both home and away in Europe.

Grealish and Gabriel Jesus miss trip

There was positive news for Sporting boss Rúben Amorim on Monday as winger Pedro Gonçalves returned to train alongside his team mates. The 23-year-old picked up a muscular injury in the 2-0 win over Famalicão and miss the following game against Porto but should be given the green light to face City.

Visiting coach Pep Guardiola is without injury-hit stars Jack Grealish, Gabriel Jesus and Cole Palmer while right-back Kyle Walker is suspended. Ederson’s deputy Zack Steffen also joined the casualty list which is why U-23 keeper Cieran Slicker has been drafted in. He is one of six academy graduates who were included in the 22-man squad for the trip, alongside Liam Delap, Kayky, James McAtee, Romeo Lavia and Luke Mbete.

Just one previous meeting in European competition

Prior to this tie, Sporting and City have crossed paths just once. They were drawn together in the Last 16 of the Europa League in 2011/12. City edged the first leg 3-2 at the Eitihad but  Xandão’s winner in the return leg saw the Portuguese side through to the next round on away goals.
