It's an excellent goal by Madrid. Asensio and Benzema combine on the right before it's played to Vinicius, who finishes well from close range.

Benzema hits the post!

Vinicius pulls the ball back to Benzema in the box and the No 9 hits the far post. It remains 1-0 to Madrid.

It's hard to believe Modric is 36. He has been everywhere and is really controlling this second half.

as.com
as.com

Well, that is the difference in quality. Pere Pons has a wonderful chance to put Alavés ahead and Madrid go up the pitch and score through Asensio almost immediately.

Benzema is through on goal but shoots into the side-netting from a tight angle on the left.

The left wing cross falls to Casemiro at the back post. He takes it down but sends his shot high and wide. It remains 0-0 as we approach the hourmark.

Madrid have lifted it in the second half. Alavés are defending quite deep with two lines of 4/5.

Vinicius does so well down the left before shooting low at Pacheco, who pulls off an excellent stop to deny the Brazilian. The ball then falls to Benzema on the edge of the box. His effort is going in but Lejeune clears it off the line.

Rioja reads the bounce of the ball, rounds Courtois, but can't squeeze the ball home from an acute angle.

Pacheco drops Alaba's free-kick but manages to collect it before there was a potential tap-in for Alavés.

Real Madrid haven't been very good so far. Alavés will be content with their display.

HT: Real Madrid 0-0 Alavés

The ball falls to Modric 20 yards from goal. His left-footed strike is straight at Pacheco, who collects it calmly. He'll be happy to get to the break at 0-0.

Valverde cuts inside onto his weaker left foot and drags his shot well wide of the Alavés goal.

as.com
37

Alavés are growing into the game. Rioja does well to beat Carvajal and get in behind the Madrid defence but he really could have done better. His low effort is straight at Courtois.

as.com
35

Benzema has been quiet so far. Valverde feeds him from the right, but Madrid's No 9 sees his shot blocked on the edge of the box.

as.com
33

Modric picks up a yellow card for fouling Loum.

Militao goes flying over Joselu and lands awkwardly. It's a heavy fall. He's now back on his feet.

as.com
28

Madrid have only won one of their last five games. They've been lacking that early-season spark of late. The injury to Benzema obviously hasn't helped their cause.

Chance Alavés!

The ball falls to Jason on the edge of the box, but his shot flies over the bar.

as.com
24

Florian Lejeune heads Benzema's cross over the bar. Modric sends the corner in and it's cleared once again by the Basque side. 0-0

as.com
23

Alavés are quite compact so Madrid are looking to beat them in wide areas through the full-backs and wide forwards.

as.com
21

Benzema sends his free-kick way over the bar. That's quite unlike him!

as.com
20

Alavés forward Luis Rioja crosses into the home side's box but it's headed clear.

as.com
17

Vinicius is offside again. It's a very close call.

as.com

Real Madrid lead the standings in LaLiga with 54 points from 24 games, four ahead of Sevilla and 11 clear of Real Betis in third place.

as.com
12

Valverde is through on goal after a wonderful cross-field ball from Alaba. The midfielder chips Pacheco but he's then flagged for offside.

as.com
10

Carvajal whips in a low cross from the right. Asensio opens his body up to direct the effort to goal but he fails to make a clear connection with it. Easy for Pacheco in the Alavés goal.

7

Vinicius is caught offside after the linesman raises his flag.

Real manager Carlo Ancelotti was heavily criticised after the loss to PSG in which his team failed to muster a shot on target and needed a brilliant performance by goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to stay in the tie.

Jason takes the Alavés free out on the left. Madrid clear the cross and move up the pitch.

as.com

Real Madrid will be hoping to get back to winning ways today after their defeat to PSG during the week.

With just one win in five, Madrid bid to stay clear of Sevilla

Real Madrid lead Sevilla by four points at the top of LaLiga going into the last three months of the season and the capital club are mired in a poor run of form at a crucial time in the title race.

Madrid have won only one of the last five games in all competitions, including a last-minute 1-0 loss to Paris St Germain in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie, giving Sevilla hope of a first Spanish league crown since 1946.

Sevilla travel to Espanyol on Sunday buoyed by a 2-0 win over Elche as Real Madrid look to bounce back with a home win over Alavés following their scoreless draw at Villarreal.

Ancelotti prioritises happiness over money as PSG prepare Mbappe mega-offer

Carlo Ancelotti was unmoved by reports Paris Saint-Germain have offered to make Real Madrid-linked Kylian Mbappé the highest-paid footballer in the world.

Mbappé was in devastating form against Madrid on Wednesday, scoring PSG's late winner in the Champions League last-16 first leg at the Parc des Princes after generally impressing throughout.

The France star's decisiveness was fitting given overarching narrative of his future, which has put the two clubs into something of a tug-of-war over the past couple of years.

"Everyone has to think what they want," Ancelotti told reporters on Friday ahead of the clash with Deportivo Alaves.

"I have to say, they pay me a lot and so I am privileged, but what I like is not the money I earn, but what I do."
