Bruce Arena sets a new MLS record

The New England Revolution picked up their first win of the 2022 MLS regular season after defeating FC Dallas 1-0 on Saturday. Carles Gil scored the winning goal at Gillette stadium to give the Revs their first three points of the campaign and this was a very important victory for head coach Bruce Arena.

New record in MLS by a coach

The 70-year-old American became Major League Soccer’s all-time leader among coaches with the most regular season wins with 241. Prior to the start of the campaign, Bruce Arena was able to surpass late Sigi Schmid on the all-time list and now he has 276 combined regular season and playoff wins in Major League Soccer.

Arena is also the winningest coach in history of the Major League Soccer playoffs with 35 wins and the United States men’s national team, between 1998 to 2006. The 70-year-old is the coach with the most Supporters’ Shield in MLS history with four after leading the Revolution to the first trophy in franchise history last year.

“If I had a bunch of lousy teams, I don't know if I’d have the record,” Arena said after Saturday’s win. “I thought at some point in 2022, we’d get another win. It’s nice to get it out of the way and try to get this team better.”

“We had experiences on and off the field,” Arena said of Schmid. “I have the greatest respect for him. He was a gentleman and really dedicated to the game and his players. He was a neighbor of my son, in Manhattan Beach. It’s an honor to be associated with him.”
