Weston McKennie suffers season-ending foot injury
The head coach of Juventus, Massimiliano Allegri, has confirmed that the United States men’s national team player will not return this season.
Weston McKennie will not return for the remainder of the campaign after suffering a broken foot in the first leg of the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League last month. The United States international had to be replaced in the 81st minute in the 1-1 draw between Juventus and Villarreal on 22 February and it was expected that he would be out between eight to 12 weeks.
McKennie returned to the US
On Sunday, Juventus defeated Spezia 1-0 in Serie A and after the match the head coach, Massimiliano Allegri, confirmed that McKennie will not return this campaign. McKennie was a key player for the Italian giants, making 28 appearances across all competitions and scoring four goals.
"The season is over for Weston because of his injury," Allegri said during the press conference after Juventus defeated Spezia. "He'll be back next season."
This is bad news for the United States men’s national team as McKennie will miss the final three games of the World Cup qualifiers in CONCACAF this month. The USMNT currently sit in second place and they need four points to secure a direct spot to the World Cup in Qatar this winter.
