Sunday’s penultimate game of the CONCACAF round-robin qualifiers could be decisive in determining which three teams qualify directly for 2022 World Cup Qatar.

A win or a draw might be enough for Gregg Berhalter's USA side to secure their place at the finals - they currently sit second in the standings, tied with Mexico on 22 points but with a superior goal difference.

Panama travel to Florida knowing that this could be their last chance to book their ticket to Qatar. And it still is only a very slim chance. They are fifth on 18 points, just one point behind Costa Rica who are in a stronger position to secure fourth place and go into June’s inter-confederations play-offs.

The fate of both the USNMT and Panama will depend on what happens a few hours earlier on Sunday in El Salvador’s meeting with Costa Rica. If Costa Rica are held to a draw, Berhalter's team would require a win to book their ticket to Qatar; if the Costa Ricans lose, a draw would be enough to see the USA advance.

Thomas Christiansen’s Panama could still mathematically log one of the top three places although for that to happen would require a small miracle. They would need to win both of their two remaining matches and hope third-placed Mexico lose theirs - to El Salvador, who have only won two from 12, and also to Honduras, who have yet to win a single match…

The USA and Panama have met a total of 24 times in official competition and friendlies with the USNMT winning 17 of those meetings - although they did lose the most recent one. Aníbal Godoy hit the only goal of the game to hand Panama their first victory over the United States in over a decade when they met in the qualifying round in October last year.
