Adele explains how James Corden helped her with divorce in final ‘Carpool Karaoke’

Things got emotional between Adele and James Corden during the final ‘Carpool Karaoke’ segment.

Things got emotional between Adele and James Corden during the final ‘Carpool Karaoke’ segment.

The final ‘Carpool Karaoke’ with James Corden features Adele, with an emotional video of the two driving around released on Monday.

“During their second ‘Carpool’ together – and Corden’s last one as host of THE LATE LATE SHOW – Adele surprises her longtime friend at home in the morning, waking him up and offering to drive the late-night host to work,” read a press statement from the show.

“Once in the car, Adele then turns the tables on Corden, asking him about past Carpools, pivotal moments in their friendship (including the time he tried, unsuccessfully, to prank her), and even a song she wrote that was inspired by an emotional conversation they shared.”

Adele gets emotional talking her divorce

While the two begin the segment in good spirits, things quickly become more serious when Adele begins talking about her divorce from Simon Konecki.

The Grammy winner, who is reportedly engaged to Rich Paul, and Konecky finalized their divorce in March 2021, two years after they announced their split following their 2018 marriage.

Adele explained that Corden helped her by going on holiday together, and that a verse from her song ‘I Drink Wine’ was actually inspired by James.

“[The verse] was inspired by a conversation that you and I had, and it was the 4th of January, 2020 or something, and we’d been on vacation together with the kids...” said Adele.

“And we were on our way home and my mood had changed and it was like the first year that I felt like I had to hold myself accountable, for just being an adult, whereas the year before that I left Simon, you and Jules and the kids were so integral in looking after me and Angelo.”

That’s when Adele began to shed tears, adding: “You used to do it with humour as well, you used to be like, ‘good luck with that one!’ with any sort of thing that I was pursuing, and you were always so, you were like an adult with me, you and Julia would always give me this advice.

“It got me thinking, I felt so unsafe, with you feeling unsafe, because you’ve always been like [the adult] you have, since I was like 21.

“And then I went to the studio a couple of weeks later, and I wrote this and I sang it into my phone and I sent it to you and I do remember you saying, ‘That’s exactly how I was feeling.’”

Adele say’s she’ll miss Corden

With Corden set to move back to England with his wife and three children once his work as host wraps up, Adele said she’ll miss him towards the end of the clip.

“You’re one of my best friends in the whole world. I’m gonna miss you so much,” Adele said at the end of the clip before breaking into tears.

“I’m just not ready to come back [to England], otherwise I would come back with you.”
