Hollywood’s top celebrities joined the Prince and Princess of Wales at the 2023 British Academy of Film Awards ceremony Sunday, February 19, where the wartime drama ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ led the race for the evening, picking up the award for ‘Best Picture’, with 14 awards in total.

The BAFTA awards show is the UK’s version of the Academy Awards, held February 2023, where ‘All Quiet’ also dominated the evening. Film critics estimate the outcome of the upcoming Oscars, which will be held on March 12, based on how well films do at the Grammys and the BAFTAs.

‘All Quiet on the Western Front’

The German-language film ‘All Quiet’ won awards for Best Film, Best Adapted Screenplay, Special Visual Effects, Best Film Not in English, Best Original Score, Best Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Sound, Best Supporting Actor, Best Editing, Best Makeup and Hair, Best Costume Design.

‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ went in with 10 nominations and picked up two awards, with Kerry Condon for best supporting actress and Barry Keoghan for best-supporting actor.

Who hosted the BAFTAs?

The actor Richard E. Grant hosted the BAFTAs after arriving at the event in the Batmobile and an introductory film clip featuring Steve Martin and kicked off the evening with a nod to the famous Will Smith and Chris Rock slap from the 2022 Oscars.

“Nobody on my watch gets slapped tonight,” he joked. “Except on the back.”

For the evening’s entertainment, Ariana DeBose sang ‘Sisters are Doin’ it for Themselves’ and peppered the song with ad-lib shout-outs to some of the women who were nominated that evening, including Cate Blanchett, Viola Davis, and Michelle Yeoh.

Who went to the BAFTAs?

The red carpet, spread out on the south bank of the river Thames, saw a flood of stars and even some royalty.

Kate Middleton and Prince William shone from the front row, and celebrities including Colin Farrell, Ana de Armas, Eddie Redmayne, Brian Cox, Florence Pugh, Helen Mirren, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Cynthia Erivo, Julianne Moore, and Lily James attended the event.
