Sam Neill, the New Zealand actor best known for his starring role in the Jurassic Park movie franchise, has died at the age of 78.

“It is with immense sadness that the whanau [family] of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday 13th July 2026 in Sydney, Australia,” read a post on Neill’s Instagram account. “Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life.

“The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for their incredible care.

“More details will be shared later, but for now, on behalf of the family, we ask that you respect their privacy as they navigate this immeasurable loss.”

Neill revealed in March 2023 that he had been diagnosed a year earlier with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma. “I’m not afraid to die,” he told an interview with The Guardian shortly afterward, “but it would annoy me. Because I’d really like another decade or two, you know?

An enormous legacy in film and television

Neill was one of the most recognizable actors in English-language cinema over the past several decades. Born in Northern Ireland and raised in New Zealand, he began gaining prominence in the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s with films such as My Brilliant Career, Possession, and Dead Calm, showcasing remarkable versatility across drama, thrillers, and auteur-driven cinema.

Neill’s definitive breakthrough to global stardom came in 1993, when he starred as the palaeontologist Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park, Steven Spielberg’s groundbreaking blockbuster that made him one of the most familiar faces in Hollywood.

Over the course of his career, he appeared in dozens of films and television series, including titles such as The Hunt for Red October, The Piano, Event Horizon, Peaky Blinders, and multiple Jurassic Park sequels.

Respected by audiences and critics alike, Neill maintained an active professional career for more than five decades, bringing a screen presence that left a lasting mark on multiple generations of viewers.
