Andrew Lloyd Webber shares updates on his son’s cancer diagnosis

As a result of his son Nick’s cancer, the Oscar-winning composer misses the opening night of his musical ‘Bad Cinderella’

After 18 months of battling with gastric cancer, things take a turn for the worst as Andrew Lloyd Webber’s son Nick is moved into a hospice to receive care for his current illness, pneumonia.

He posted a video on Instagram explaining the circumstances that led him to miss the opening night of ‘Bad Cinderella’, his newest Broadway musical in New York City.

Outpouring of support

“I want to thank you for the outpouring of messages of support for my son, Nick. He’s now been moved into a hospice and he’s battling away,” he says in the video.

“I think he’s over the worst of this first bout of pneumonia that he’s got as a result of his cancer, which is just ghastly. We’re all here, and the family here has gathered around, and it was the right place for us all to be I think.”

Though he was “absolutely gutted” about not being able to make it and wished the cast the best of luck, Webber says he is very needed back in England with his family.

“Thank you for all of your messages, everybody in the cast, and good luck, particularly to young Linedy who will be playing Cinderella and who has just been absolutely magnificent,” Webber said.

He continued, “The reports I’ve been getting back from New York from the team there just show that the show is in as good as possible condition as it could possibly be.”

Grammy-nominated composer

His eldest son, Nick, is a Grammy-nominated composer and recorder producer, recently nominated in 2022 for mixing the album to Cinderella, which opened last night on Broadway as ‘Bad Cinderella’.

He’s most known for his work on the BBC One’s ‘Love, Lies and Records,’ as well as ‘The Last Bus’ and ‘Mr Invisible.’

“I’m going to go see Nick in a minute,” Webber ends the video with “I’m going to pass on all of the fantastic wishes that I’ve had for him from everywhere all around the world.”
