Angelina Jolie, deeply concerned: “Right now, I don’t recognize my country”
The actress was speaking from northern Spain when she opened up on her feelings regarding the current climate in the USA.

One of the most famous faces in the world, Angelina Jolie, has expressed her fear and worry at the state of play in the United States amid growing authoritarianism in the country at the hand of Donald Trump.
Speaking at the San Sebastián Film Festival, Angelina Jolie caused heads to turn when she admitted that she no longer recognises the United States in its current state. Speaking while promoting her film Couture, Jolie was asked what she fears most as both an artist and an American.
Her answer reflected deep concerns regarding just where the US is going under the second Trump administration: “It’s obviously a very difficult question,” she said. “Only to say, I love my country, but I don’t at this time recognise my country. I’ve always lived internationally, my family is international, my friends, my life. My worldview is equal, united, international. So anything anywhere that divides or, of course, limits personal expressions and freedoms from anyone, I think is very dangerous."

“These are very, very heavy times we are living in together”
"These are such serious times," she added, “that we have to be careful not to say things casually… But to say that, of course, like all of you and everyone watching, these are very, very heavy times we are living in together.” Her remarks come during a current media and political storm regarding censorship, polarisation, and democratic values.
Trump’s grip on society is tightening, with Jimmy Kimmel being taken off the air after comments about the president the latest step towards authoritarianism in the States.
While Jolie did not single out specific political figures or events, her words certainly made clear that she feels anxiety about the health of American democracy in the modern age.
