Almost 13 years after the release of the first ‘Avatar’ film and it’s clear that it’s still a fan favorite film.

On January 22, James Cameron’s sequel ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ officially surpassed the $2 billion mark in worldwide box office sales.

When it was released on December 16, 2022, the 20th Century Studios and Disney’s long-awaited sequel made $134 million on opening weekend alone.

The film becomes the sixth in history to achieve this milestone alongside the original ‘Avatar’ and ‘Titanic’, which are also directed by Cameron, Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Endgame’ and ‘Avengers: Infinity War,’ and ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens.’

As of now, the movie has also taken the title of highest-grossing studio film in the pandemic era.

What is ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ about?

Avatar: The Way of Water’ takes place more than a decade after the events of the first film. We find that Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) have formed a family and are doing everything to stay together. However, they must leave their home and explore the regions of Pandora. When an ancient threat resurfaces, Jake must fight a difficult war against the humans.

Who stars in ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’?

This film includes original cast members such as Worthington, Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, Stephen Lang and Giovanni Ribisi the movie also includes new stars such as ‘Titanic’s’ Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Trinity Bliss, Jamie Flatters, Britain Dalton, Filip Geljo, Bailey Bass, Chloe Coleman and more.

Will there be more ‘Avatar’ films in the future?

Cameron isn’t done with the world of Pandora yet! After the release of ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ the hit director revealed that he has plans to expand the ‘Avatar’ universe.

As of now ‘Avatar 3′ is set to hit theaters on December 20, 2024. Not much is known about the film but Cameron has implied that it will follow the Sully family, with a focus on the kids, and will also include a new take on the Na’vi with Cameron saying he wants to “show the Na’vi from another angle,” in an interview with 20 Minutes.

With ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ introducing viewers to the Quartich and the skypeople we wouldn’t be surprised to see them in future films as well.

Along with the announcement of ‘Avatar 3′, Disney also confirmed that ‘Avatar 4′ is set to release on December 18, 2026, in hopes of sticking to their initial “one Avatar film every two years” schedule.
