Brandon Sanderson confirms which ‘Mistborn’ character will be played by a famous actor: “He will be the big star”
The creator of the Cosmere wants only one major, established actor for the ‘Mistborn’ movie, and has around 20 candidates in mind.
Brandon Sanderson is still months away from bringing the Cosmere to movie theaters with the first Mistborn film, but he’s already made one thing crystal clear: he doesn’t want a cast packed with Hollywood celebrities.
During a special livestream celebrating the 20th anniversary of Mistborn, Sanderson said only one character will be played by a big‑name actor — Kelsier.
Kelsier: the lone A‑list role
Sanderson explained that casting Kelsier will be both “complicated” and “easy” at the same time: “Kelsier will be the big star. He’s the character we’ll cast with a major, established actor — someone who helps sell the movie. But it’s also easier because there’s a very small number of actors who fit the role.”
He added that anyone familiar with the character could probably make a list of about 20 actors who could play him convincingly. The team already has several names in mind, and the next step is figuring out who’s interested — and who’s actually available.
The fan‑favorite dream pick: Nikolaj Coster‑Waldau
For years, Cosmere fans have built their own fantasy casts for a hypothetical Mistborn movie, and one name has always towered above the rest: Nikolaj Coster‑Waldau, best known for playing Jaime Lannister in Game of Thrones.
He looks the part, he has the charisma, and he’s proven he can thrive in epic fantasy. But time has caught up with the dream.
Coster‑Waldau is now 55, and while Sanderson has said he could imagine a 60‑year‑old Kelsier on screen, the initial search will focus on actors in their 30s to 40s, closer to Kelsier’s age in The Final Empire.
When will ‘Mistborn’ hit theaters?
There’s still no release date for the first Mistborn movie. Sanderson confirmed he’s close to finishing the script, and once Apple approves it, the team can officially begin casting and pre‑production.
