Britney Spears arrested for driving under the influence: Is she in jail?
Britney Spears faces another legal problem. The singer was arrested in Ventura County, California, according to TMZ.
Britney Spears is facing new legal trouble this week. The pop star was arrested in Ventura County, California, for allegedly driving under the influence.
According to a report from TMZ, the Toxic singer was handcuffed by the California Highway Patrol at around 9:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday, March 4. She was booked by the sheriff’s department at roughly 3:00 a.m. ET, and released from jail around 6:00 a.m. ET on Thursday.
People reported that the arrest was handled as a “cite and release”, meaning Spears was not held on probation conditions. She is expected to appear in court on May 4.
“An unfortunate and completely inexcusable incident”
A representative for Britney Spears told People that the situation was “an unfortunate and completely inexcusable incident.”
“Britney will take the proper steps and comply with the law, and we hope this becomes the first step toward a long‑overdue change in her life. We hope she gets the help and support she needs during this difficult time,” the statement read.
The rep added that Spears’ children will continue spending time with her and that her loved ones are working on a plan to help her stabilize and move forward. Spears’ Instagram account—where she is usually very active—was deactivated following the arrest.
Five years after the end of her conservatorship
News of her arrest arrives nearly five years after her conservatorship officially ended in November 2021, and just weeks after reports surfaced that she sold the rights to her entire music catalog. According to Us Weekly, the deal was worth close to $200 million.
A source told the outlet that the agreement had been in the works for some time and that the decision to sell was entirely Britney’s.
“She felt it was the right moment and believes she’s closed that chapter of her life,” the insider said, adding that the singer has “no plans to release new music” in the near future.
