Bruce Springsteen gives his take on what has gone wrong in the U.S.: “I can’t believe it was this moron that came along”

The fact “Born in the U.S.A.” is not only the title of one of Bruce Springsteen’s famous songs, but is also the name of one of his biggest albums, is proof of how proud the veteran rocker is of his American roots. But he doesn’t love the direction the United States is travelling in at the moment, as he revealed in an interview with The New York Times.

Springsteen, who turns 76 on Sep. 23, has never been one to hide his political views. Back in 2008, he appeared at several rallies in support of Barack Obama, and campaigned for the Democrat’s re-election in 2012.

Bruce Springsteen’s beef with Donald Trump

In recent years, the musician has been an outspoken critic of current U.S. President Donald Trump, who he has referred to as the “conman from Queens” on several occasions.

Springsteen has lashed out at the Republican at many of his concerts, most recently labelling the Trump administration “corrupt, incompetent, and treasonous” during a gig in Manchester, England. That prompted an inevitable response from the White House resident, who called the musician “highly overrated” and “dumb as a rock” on Truth Social.

“Moron” Trump’s “American tragedy”

“Moron” Trump is responsible for “an American tragedy,” according to Springsteen, who has been horrified by the actions of the current president since he took office for a second time in January this year.

“I think that it was the combination of the deindustrialization of the country and then the incredible increase in wealth disparity that left so many people behind. It was ripe for a demagogue.

“And while I can’t believe it was this moron that came along, he fit the bill for some people. But what we’ve been living through in the last 70 days is things that we all said, ‘This can’t happen here.’ ‘This will never happen in America.’ And here we are.”

The “Dancing in the Dark” singer is, however, hopeful the United States’ bleak outlook - in his view - will end sooner rather than later.

“We have a long democratic history. We don’t have an autocratic history as a nation. It’s fundamentally democratic, and I believe that at some point that’s going to rear its head and things will swing back. Let’s knock on wood.”
