John Leguizamo reveals the grueling transformation ordeal behind his role in Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’

The actor has revealed what the characterization process for his role was like. “Chris and I don’t believe in wigs”.

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey hit theaters on Friday, July 17, and early numbers show audiences are showing up exactly as expected for a film of this scale. According to Box Office figures, the movie pulled in $264 million during its opening weekend — a massive debut for what Nolan himself has called his most ambitious project yet.

With a cast stacked with A‑listers — Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya — plus Colombian‑American actor John Leguizamo as Eumaeus, the film was always destined to draw crowds. But for Leguizamo, landing a role in a Nolan epic came with a surprising downside.

“I don’t know if I can function like this”

In an interview with Today, Leguizamo opened up about the intense physical challenges he faced on set — starting with the custom contact lenses Nolan insisted on.

I think Chris wanted me to have vision problems, because he wanted a fusion between Homer and Eumaeus. So he found an expert in Los Angeles who studied cataracts and painted the contact lenses. I said, ‘I don’t know if I can function like this.’”

The lenses were designed so he could see just enough to move safely, but not much more.

A full transformation — down to the last wrinkle

Leguizamo also described the extreme makeup process that aged him into a 100‑year‑old man. It was, in his words, “crazy.”

They tightened my skin and glued it. My whole face was wrinkled. Then they added huge eye bags and age spots. They glued random hairs everywhere — it was insane. And then they bleached my hair. It took two days, five hours each day. It stayed that way because Chris and I don’t believe in wigs.

The result was a total transformation — one that demanded hours of patience and left him nearly unrecognizable.
