Casey Affleck’s “beef” with Jon Hamm: “What’s insufferable is jealousy, bitterness and resentment”

Affleck has finally bitten back at comments made by Hamm about Boston’s “insufferable” sports fans.

Update:

Casey Affleck has finally hit back at some sports-related “beef” started by acting buddy Jon Hamm, who tore into Boston and Chicago sports fans during a guest appearance on The Rich Eisen Show in December 2024.

Appearing on the same program this week, Massachusetts native Affleck got the chance to respond to St. Louis Cardinals fan Hamm, whose comments sparked a lighthearted “feud” between the pair.

“I saw Jon Hamm come on your show. He’s a buddy of mine, he’s a great guy. But he’s a Cardinals fan…”

This is where the pair’s beef begins.

What Jon Hamm said about Chicago and Boston fans

To fully understand the situation, we have to go back more than a year to Hamm’s sports fandom chat with Eisen.

“I had a little problem with one of your callers, a guy from Chicago. My God, what a complaint. ‘It’s so hard to be a Chicago fan.’ What?!"

The actor then went on to list a series of relatively recent achievements by Chicago teams across several sports.

“Let’s start with the Bears’ dominance in the 80s. Then you move into the Bulls. Then you move into the Blackhawks, two Cups within two years. Then you get to the Cubs breaking the (World Series) curse. This is in this guy’s lifetime, I’m sure.”

Hamm’s main argument focused on Chicago, but he also brought Boston into the conversation in an unflattering way, suggesting sports fans from the two cities compete with each other for “insufferability.”

Affleck’s tongue-in-cheeck response to Hamm

After stewing on it for more than a year, Affleck finally got the chance to fire back and turn the tables on Hamm in tongue-in-cheek fashion.

“There’s nothing insufferable about winning, you know? I mean what’s insufferable is jealousy, bitterness and resentment, right? To be a Cardinals fan, you’re losing to the Red Sox, twice. You’re Jon Hamm, you’re watching that., you’re frustrated. Then you get your moment on the great Rich Eisen Show and you just badmouth the fans of the Red Sox?

“It’s not the fans’ fault they have winning teams and great organizations,” Affleck continued. “What are we supposed to do? Not root? Not cheer? It was jealousy and bitterness. He’s a great guy, I love him, but I think he’s better than that remark.”

Red Sox vs. Cardinals bragging rights in 2026

The 2026 MLB season begins on February 20, and Hamm will be hoping his beloved Cardinals can get the upper hand over Affleck’s Red Sox and claim the baseball bragging rights between the two.

In 2025, Boston reached the postseason but was eliminated in the Wild Card Series, while St. Louis missed the playoffs, something the franchise has not done since 2022.
