Almost a year after his unexpected passing while shooting a film in Dominican Republic, Ray Liotta’s cause of death has finally been revealed.

What caused Ray Liotta’s death?

According to documents obtained by TMZ, Liotta died as a result of issues with his heart and respiratory system that included pulmonary edema (i.e., fluid in the lungs), acute heart failure and respiratory insufficiency.

Medical authorities also listed atherosclerosis, which is a thickening of the arteries caused by a buildup of plaque in the inner lining, as an underlying issue. The manner of death was classified as “natural and nonviolent.”

Liotta’s life and career

Liotta was filming ‘Dangerous Waters’ in the Dominican Republic when he passed away in his sleep in May 2022.

In recent years, he also appeared in ‘The Sopranos’ prequel movie, ‘The Many Saints of Newark’, as well as the Prime Video series ‘Hanna’.

Liotta is survived by his daughter Karsen, and his fiancée Jacy Nittolo, who was with him while he was filming.

“My life these past couple of years have been nothing but truly magical,” Nittolo wrote in an Instagram tribute following Liotta’s passing.

“Ray and I share a deep love that I will cherish in my heart forever. We laughed daily and we were inseparable. The chemistry was wild in the best way.

“He was everything in the world to me and we couldn’t get enough of each other. The kind of real love that one dreams of.

“He was the most beautiful person inside and out that I’ve ever known…and even that is an understatement.”

Liotta was best known for his leading role in Martin Scorsese’s 1990 crime film ‘Goodfellas’. He also received praise for his roles in ‘Cop Land’ and ‘Field of Dreams’.

He was honored with a postumous star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in February 2023, with Karsen appearing on his behalf.

“I’m so touched to be accepting this honor on behalf of my dad. I couldn’t be more proud of him,” she said during the ceremony.

“He was a one-of-a-kind actor and the best friend, brother and father anyone could have asked for. I lucked out with you.

“If you have a Ray in your life, you’re lucky. I love you so much. Thank you for your work and the imprint you left on me and all of those who love you.

“Everyone deserves a Ray in their life.”
