Concern for Bruce Willis: the actor’s health worsens, he is unable to walk
Hollywood legend Willis, 70, was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia in early 2023.
It’s been nearly two and a half years since the world learned of Bruce Willis’ diagnosis with frontotemporal dementia, a progressive neurodegenerative disease that severely impacts language, behavior and mobility.
Since then, fans, family and colleagues have followed his journey with deep concern, hoping for positive news amid a difficult prognosis.
Unfortunately, recent reports suggest a marked deterioration in the actor’s condition. According to The Express Tribune, “Willis’ aphasia and frontotemporal dementia have progressed to the point he can barely speak, read, or walk.”
While these claims have not been officially confirmed by his family, they align with the known progression of FTD. Screenwriter and longtime friend Glenn Gordon Caron has previously confirmed that Willis is no longer “totally verbal”.
What is frontotemporal dementia?
Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a rare but aggressive form of dementia that targets the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain - regions responsible for behavior, personality, language, and, in some cases, motor function.
Unlike Alzheimer’s disease, which typically begins with memory loss, FTD often starts with changes in behavior, emotional regulation or language. It most commonly affects individuals between the ages of 45 and 64 and can present in several forms:
- Behavioral variant: Characterized by personality changes, apathy, disinhibition, inappropriate behavior and loss of empathy or judgment.
- Primary progressive aphasia: Involves difficulty speaking, understanding, reading or writing. Patients may lose vocabulary or misuse words.
- Progressive motor decline: Includes symptoms similar to Parkinson’s or ALS, such as stiffness, tremors or frequent falls.
FTD is a progressive disease with no known cure. However, treatments are available to help manage symptoms and improve quality of life. Early diagnosis is crucial for planning care and support.
