Beyond his groundbreaking Latin music career, Daddy Yankee has had a love for baseball that has followed him since childhood. The singer hopes to blend music and baseball, specifically within his new role as Global Ambassador for the 2023 World Baseball Classic.

According to Major League Baseball, Ramón Luis Ayala Rodriguez, better known by his stage name Daddy Yankee, dreamed of becoming a Major League third baseman one day. However, because of an accident as a teenager, his dream was put aside for his prosperous music career.

What is the World Baseball Classic?

The World Baseball Classic brings together the best international baseball talent in an international tournament founded in 2006, with 20 teams playing for the title. The last World Baseball Classic was in 2017, with the U.S. winning its first title with Puerto Rico as runner-up.

This honor comes soon after the Puerto Rico singer wrapped up his ‘La Última Vuelta World Tour,’ which was the second biggest tour by a Latin Artist in music history.

The World Baseball Classic Anthem

Daddy Yankee’s song ‘Chispa’ will serve as the World Baseball Classic anthem and will be featured across WBC and MLB social platforms, in park activities, and TV Broadcast presentations around the world.

“It’s just a blessing being here,” Daddy Yankee said. “I dreamt of being at this kind of event and being part of it. Baseball is part of my life. Besides being the global ambassador, I just want to share this sport with the entire world.”

‘Chispa’ was originally intended to be on Daddy Yankee’s last album ‘LEGENDADDY’ but ultimately fell through and was left off the album. Despite that, the song will find a home within the MLB celebrations.

The singer commented on how he knew he had the perfect song in mind as the anthem for the upcoming events.

“Chispa [which translates to spark in English] is what the game is about,” Daddy Yankee said. “I showed it to Major League Baseball, and they told me they loved it and it’s the energy we need for the tournament.”

“Esa canción es fuego,” he followed up in Spanish. Which translates to “that song is fire” in English.
