Did ‘Evil Dead Rise’ topple ‘Super Mario Bros. Movie’ at the box office this weekend?

While ‘Evil Dead’ is raking in numbers at the box office, is it enough to overtake ‘Super Mario’?

Did ‘Evil Dead Rise’ topple ‘Super Mario Bros. Movie’ at the box office this weekend?

The latest installment in the ‘Evil Dead’ franchise, ‘Evil Dead Rise’ accumulated a solid $23.5 million from North American box offices on a $19 million budget this weekend.

However, this wasn’t enough to topple ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’, which raked in a stellar $58.2 million on its third weekend.

How much has ‘Super Mario’ made?

After three weeks, ‘Super Mario’ has garnered over $434.3 million in North America and $871 million globally. Not only is it the biggest movie of the year, but it’s also on track to gross over $1 billion.

As it stands, ‘Super Mario’ has overtaken ‘Incredibles 2′ as the highest third weekend ever for an animated film. It’s also the seventh largest third weekend of all time, surpassing the MCU’s ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’.

What are the reviews for ‘Super Mario’?

The film is not popular among critics and currently sits at 59 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Though the high box office numbers speak for itself, fans seem to be loving the movie.

Fans even scored the film an A on CinemaScore.

“I’m not sure what high-art some of these critics are looking for but ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ works for both fans of the long-lasting game franchise and people who want an entertaining escape,” said reviewer Adam Olinger.

What is ‘Evil Dead Rise’ about?

‘Evil Dead Rise’ is the fifth installment in the franchise and is a supernatural horror about two estranged sisters on a mission to save their family from demonic creatures.

The film performed well with critics and has 84 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and a B on CinemaScore from fans.

“The fifth entry in the classic horror franchise unfortunately relies on kids in peril, but it ramps up the terror with its great use of creepy settings, potent characters, and extreme gore effects,” said reviewer Jeffrey M. Anderson.
