Rust, what is the movie about?
Directed by Joel Souza, the story is set in Wyoming in the 1880s and follows Harland Rust, an outlaw played by Baldwin, who goes on the run with his 13-year-old grandson, portrayed by Patrick Scott McDermott. The plot unfolds after the boy is sentenced to death for accidentally killing a rancher.
Rust premiered at the Polish Film Festival in Torun in November, and was followed by a tribute to Hutchins as well as a panel discussion with the film’s director. Souza admitted that after the accident, he was reluctant to complete the film and only did so after being convinced by Hutchins’ husband, Matt. Filming resumed in April 2023.
“At first I didn’t really know if I wanted to do this to be honest, but as I found out that this is what Matt wanted, this is what the family wanted, it started to change the equation for me. It was going to be more about honoring her legacy and her memory, saying that her final work was completed and that began to change my mind on things,” Souza said in declarations picked up by the BBC.
Baldwin didn’t not attend the premiere, nor did Hutchins’s mother Olga Solovey, who filed a lawsuit against Baldwin and the production team for negligence.
