Update:

More than 30 years on from the release of Mufasa: The Lion King’, the prequel of the iconic story is set to hit streaming platforms in the United States.

The new film opened in cinemas on December 20 and received broadly positive reviews. It has already brought in more than $600 million at the box office and is sure to be a sensation on streaming platforms.

‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ is now available to stream on premium video on demand platforms, including Prime Video, Apple TV and Fandango at Home. However don’t think that you’ll be able to watch for free. The film is available to rent for 48 hours for the hefty price of $24.99.

When can I watch ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ on Disney+?

Of course, like most new releases, ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ is expected to arrive on streaming platforms without additional charges fairly soon. As a Disney-produced picture, we’d expect that the company’s Disney+ streaming platform will be the first to show it.

According to Forbes, Disney’s typical release pattern would be to make the movie available on Disney+ roughly three months after its theatrical release. That would mean that Disney+ subscribers could get the chance to stream it in the second half of March 2025.

The movie is directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Barry Jenkins, who is also behind ‘Moonlight’. Speaking about the experience of making the Mufasa film, Jenkins said: “It actually reminded me of when I first got into filmmaking. This felt oddly enough very similar to that first experience. You can sort of run away from that newness and be intimidated by it, or you can embrace it, learn the things you don’t know and then start to bend it.”
