Does Keanu Reeves do his own stunts in ‘John Wick’?

Keanu Reeves is famously known for performing many of his own stunts in movies.

Keanu Reeves returns as John Wick in the fourth instalment of the ‘John Wick’ franchise, ‘John Wick: Chapter 4′, and no doubt you’ll see plenty of stunts in the movie.

No shortage of stunts in ‘John Wick’

The ‘John Wick’ franchise impressed many viewers with the assassin’s many high-stakes action sequences.

In a recent interview on Jake’s Takes, director Chad Stahelski gave a sneak peek into how he decides which scenes require a stuntman, and which scenes Reeves can do.

“It depends on my gauging of you, if I think you’re a capable human and you’re comfortable with it, that no longer becomes a stunt, it’s a special ability,” Stahelski revealed.

“It’s when you go outside of what I think your limitations or capabilities are.”

According to Reeves, he performed between 90 and 95 percent of all stunts in the first two ‘John Wick’ movies. The franchise and Reeves’ skills helped popularize gun fu (fusing firearm combat and kung-fu fighting techniques) in Hollywood films.

‘John Wick’ director Chad Stahelski was previously Keanu Reeves’ stunt double

Prior to becoming a film director, Stahelski was a stuntman himself. He has extensive expertise in the area, and was even Reeves’ stunt double in the Oscar winning sci-fi film ‘The Matrix’.

Stahelski praised Reeves’ capabilities for performing his own stunts, and respects his devotion to perfecting all aspects of his acting roles.

“Keanu, as far as martial arts choreography and driving goes, he is better in a car than I ever was as a stunt double,” Stahelski said.

“He does more choreography and executes the memorization of the moves, safety with the gun thing, better than I would say 95 to 98 percent of any stunt person I’ve ever seen.”

Stahelski also joked about stepping in for Reeves for some of the stunts on the set of ‘John Wick’ - just for old times’ sake.

Reeves spent three months training for ‘John Wick: Chapter 4′ stunts

Reeves devoted a full 12 weeks just to physical training for the upcoming ‘John Wick’ film. Reeves told Total Film magazine that fans can expect high levels of action and excitement in the fourth film.

“‘John Wick: Chapter 4′ has the most action of any of the [’John Wick’] films, which is saying a lot,” Reeves said.

Reeves has starred in many action-packed movies throughout his career, but he revealed that this ‘John Wick’ film was his most demanding role yet.

“John Wick: Chapter 4′ was the hardest physical role I’ve ever had in my career so far,” the actor revealed.

“They really trained me up to be able to have what we call the toolbox.”
