Based on the 1995 novel ‘Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West,’ the musical ‘Wicked’ will be adapted into two films, both of which will be directed by Jon M. Chu.

In a recent interview, actress, and singer Dove Cameron revealed that she auditioned for the role of Glinda. However, the role was eventually given to pop star Ariana Grande.

Cameron’s love for the character

In 2019, Cameron told ET that playing Glinda would be “the role of a lifetime. I’ve been dreaming of it since I was seven. I mean, I should be so lucky to be considered.”

Cameron recalled the audition process to The Wrap.

“I know that for everybody who did go out for it, it was a very long process,” she said. “It was one of the longer processes I’ve been a part of.”

Despite not getting the part, Cameron expressed her enthusiasm for Grande.

“She’s a genuinely dear friend of mine,” she said. “We met when we were super young. I think she’s gonna kill it.

“I think the whole cast is phenomenal, head to toe. So, as a fan, I’m really, really excited to see it.”

Both Cameron and Grande began their careers as child stars on the Disney Channel and Nickelodeon, respectively. The two became friends while working on ‘Hairspray! Live’ together.

Film adaptations of musicals

Film adaptations of musicals don’t have the best track record with movies like ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ (2004) and ‘The Last Five Years’ (2014) earning negative reviews from both musical theater and non-musical theater fans.

However, in recent years, there has been a slew of film adaptations that have been celebrated as great movie musicals. This includes Jon M. Chu’s adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s ‘In The Heights’ (2021), Lin-Manuel Miranda’s adaptation of Jonathan Larson’s ‘Tick, Tick…Boom!’ (2021) and Steven Spielberg’s ‘West Side Story’ (2021).

Alongside Grande, the cast of ‘Wicked’ will include Cynthia Erivo, Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum among others.

‘Wicked Part 1′ is slated for a November 2024 release.
