Eva Longoria reveals her big U.S. decision: “most Americans aren’t so lucky”

The Desperate Housewives actress lives with her husband and son between Mexico, where her partner is from, and Marbella. The turning point: Trump.

Donald Trump’s election as president of the United States late last year triggered a wave of reactions both at home and abroad. For many, the return of the eccentric businessman to the White House marks the start of a period of danger — and also uncertainty — for the world, something Richard Gere himself highlighted a few days ago when accepting the International Goya Award in Granada.

It’s an opinion shared by other American celebrities, some of whom have even voiced their desire to leave the country. That’s the case for Eva Longoria, the Desperate Housewives star, who feels her time in the United States has come to an end. In fact, the actress has sold her Beverly Hills home and relocated to Spain, planning to split her time between Europe and Mexico with her husband, José Bastón, and their son, Santiago.

“I’m privileged. I can get away and go somewhere. Most Americans aren’t that lucky. They’ll be stuck in this dystopian country, and my anxiety and sadness are for them,” the Texas-born actress said after moving abroad.

Eva Longoria: Searching for Spain

Ahead of the upcoming premiere of Eva Longoria: Searching for Spain (CNN) — a show where the actress travels across Spain exploring its quirkiest corners and showcasing its cuisine — Longoria speaks about her new life and reflects on this personal shift.

“Eleven generations ago, one of my ancestors left Spain for the New World and a new life. 400 years later, I’m returning to see how the land and its people have created one of the most exciting cuisines in the world,” she says in the show’s trailer, which premieres on April 27. “If you can preserve your food and your recipes, then you can show the rest of the world who you are.”

“It’s not surprising he won. What’s shocking is that a convicted criminal who spews so much hate could hold the highest office,” Longoria says, explaining that she doesn’t want to speak badly about the country where she’s lived, but admits there are aspects of life there she can no longer tolerate.

“I’ve lived here my entire adult life, but even before the COVID-19 pandemic, everything was changing — the atmosphere was different. And then COVID came and pushed everything to the limit. Whether it’s homelessness or taxes, it’s not that I want to criticize California, but I feel like this chapter of my life is over.”
