‘Fast X’ pulls in $28 million in Thursday and Friday screenings
The latest installment in the ‘Fast & Furious’ franchise is expected to bring in $67 million at the domestic box office.
‘Fast X’ released in theaters this weekend, bringing in $28 million in screenings so far at the domestic box office with $7.5 million coming from Thursday previews.
The film is expected to bring in around $67 million, which would make it one of the lowest-earning debuts for a ‘Fast & Furious’ movie to date.
However, the international box office has played a massive role in the franchise’s overall success with the lowest-grossing film ‘The Fast & the Furious: Tokyo Drift’ raking in approximately $157 million and the highest-grossing film ‘Furious 7′ generating over $1 billion.
With a budget of $340 million and an additional $100 million in marketing, Universal Pictures is certainly hoping to pull in big numbers overseas.
What is ‘Fast X’ about?
The latest installment in the franchise follows Dominic Toretto as a new villain threatens to tear his family apart.
Returning cast members include Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Sung Kang, Jordanna Brewster, Helen Mirren, Jason Statham, Scott Eastwood, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Charlize Theron.
The movie will also see new faces like Jason Momoa, Brie Larson, Daniela Melchoir, Alan Ritchson, Leo Abelo Perry, and Rita Moreno.
The reviews
As it stands, ‘Fast X’ has accumulated less than stellar reviews. It currently sits at 54 percent on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and scored a B+ on CinemaScore from fans.
“The increasingly predictable, self-referential nature of the storytelling makes every subsequent film feel like a parody of itself—the cinematic equivalent of drifting around in circles,” said reviewer Miles Surrey from ‘The Ringer’.
Despite the negative reviews, many are praising Momoa’s acting in the film.
“A tad better than the previous film, yet still one of the weakest entries of the whole franchise,” said reviewer Fico Cangiano from ‘CineXpress’. “Come for more absurd, silly action hijinks, stay for Jason Momoa’s flashy, bonkers Dante Reyes - best villain of the series.”
