Goodbye Johnny Depp? Insider reveals details of ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ reboot with Margot Robbie

After years of uncertainty, ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ could return with a fresh story, new leads, and Margot Robbie rumored to be involved.

New details are emerging about Disney’s next chapter in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, including major clues about its story and long-term direction.

According to a well-connected Hollywood insider, the upcoming “Pirates” movie will center on the son of Jack Sparrow, signaling a clear generational handoff for the long-running adventure series. While it remains unclear whether Johnny Depp will return in any capacity, Margot Robbie is still said to be attached to the project.

Jack Sparrow’s son takes center stage?

On Feb. 4, journalist Jeff Sneider shared several key updates about what is widely being referred to as "Pirates of the Caribbean 6," the next installment in Disney’s blockbuster franchise, which still does not have an official title.

Sneider, who runs The InSneider, has a long track record covering Hollywood and frequently breaks stories that are later confirmed by major industry outlets.

According to the report, the film is considered a top strategic priority for Disney’s incoming leadership, headed by Josh D’Amaro. The executive transition is expected to take effect in March 2026. After years of uncertainty and stalled development, the studio is now pushing to fast-track the franchise’s return.

The new “Pirates” movie is described as a soft reboot. The plan is to preserve the world and legacy characters fans recognize while introducing new leads. At the heart of the story would be Jack Sparrow’s son, who would effectively take the helm both narratively and symbolically. No actor has yet been announced for the role.

Margot Robbie still linked to ‘Pirates’ project

The insider report also notes that Margot Robbie remains connected to the film, although it is not yet clear whether she would play a leading or supporting role. Robbie was previously attached to a “Pirates” spin-off that ultimately stalled and never moved forward.

Her continued involvement suggests Disney has not completely abandoned that creative direction, even as the franchise shifts toward a new central character.

A more ambitious creative approach?

Behind the scenes, Oscar-nominated screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns, who earned acclaim for “1917,” is reportedly in talks to write the script. If finalized, her involvement would point to a more ambitious and character-driven approach than some recent entries in the series.

That said, Disney has not officially confirmed any of these details. There is currently no release date, no director attached, and no formal cast announcements.

Will Johnny Depp return as Jack Sparrow?

For now, fans will have to wait for Disney to make its plans official. Still, after several quiet years, the return of “Pirates of the Caribbean” appears closer than ever.

One of the biggest unanswered questions remains whether Depp will reprise his iconic role as Jack Sparrow. That decision is still up in the air as Depp prepares his broader return to Hollywood with “Ebenezer,” a new adaptation of “A Christmas Carol.”

Whatever the outcome, all signs point to Disney attempting to pass the torch without fully cutting ties to the past, steering the franchise forward with a new Sparrow at the wheel.
