Update:

Guy Pearce says he’s expecting a by-now familiar outcome when he goes up for the Best Supporting Actor award at next weekend’s Oscars.

In what is the first Academy Awards nod of his career, Pearce is among the Supporting Actor nominees for his performance alongside Adrien Brody in The Brutalist - a period film that is up for several Oscars.

But the 57-year-old Australian, who is also known for hit movies such as L.A. Confidential and Memento, appears to have ruled out any prospect of landing the golden statuette at Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre.

“Kieran will win, again”

In an interview in the U.K. media this week, Pearce tipped fellow Supporting Actor contender Kieran Culkin to continue his run of success this awards season, for his turn opposite Jesse Eisenberg in the comedy-drama A Real Pain.

I’m not gonna win! Kieran will win, again,” Pearce told The Guardian’s Sian Cain, adding that it feels “funny” to now be an Oscar nominee, more than three decades on from his big-screen debut in 1990’s Heaven Tonight.

“Not funny that I haven’t had one before - just funny to even get one, I reckon,” Pearce said. “I stop and go, ‘Wow, is that - really? OK? That’s really happened?’”

What other awards has Culkin won this season?

Pearce was already among the nominees beaten by Culkin at this year’s Golden Globes, BAFTAs and Critics’ Choice Awards. The Succession star also took the supporting actor spoils at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday.

And, given Culkin’s domination of the awards ceremonies so far in 2025, the critics and the bookmakers agree with Pearce that the 42-year-old is the overwhelming frontrunner for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar.

Anything other than a Culkin win “stunning and unprecedented”

Culkin comfortably tops the betting ahead of A Complete Unknown’s Edward Norton, with Pearce currently the joint-fourth favorite alongside The Apprentice’s Jeremy Strong, according to odds provided by the betting comparison website Oddschecker.

Rolling Stone’s David Fear says the Oscar is “basically [Culkin’s] to lose”, while ScreenRant’s Greg MacArthur declares: “At this point, it would be stunning and unprecedented if Culkin didn’t take home the Best Supporting Actor award.” A host of other media outlets, such as Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, also name the actor as the Academy’s expected pick.

The bookmakers’ third favorite, Yura Borisov, completes the line-up of the Oscars’ Best Supporting Actor nominees, for his performance in Anora, a movie that is being heavily tipped for Best Picture.

What other Oscars is The Brutalist nominated for?

In all, The Brutalist has been nominated for 10 Oscars.

In addition to Pearce’s nod for Best Supporting Actor, the film is a contender for: Best Picture; Best Actor, for Brody; Best Director, for Brady Corbet; Best Supporting Actress, for Felicity Jones; Best Original Screenplay; Best Original Score; Best Cinematography; Best Editing; and Best Production Design.
