‘House of the Dragon’ Season 2 now filming – what to expect?
Season 2 of ‘House of the Dragons’ has officially begun production.
Fans of the ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel spinoff series ‘House of the Dragon’ were given a first glimpse of season 2 when a picture of the iron throne was shared on the show’s official Twitter account earlier today.
The caption for the photo confirmed that production had finally begun on season 2, with the caption: “It’s time to return to King’s Landing.”
When will season 2 premiere?
“‘House of the Dragon’ has returned,” said Ryan Condal, Co-Creator/Showrunner/Executive Producer for ‘House of the Dragon’, in a statement.
“We are thrilled to be shooting again with members of our original family as well as new talents on both sides of the camera. All your favorite characters will soon be conspiring at the council tables, marching with their armies, and riding their dragons into battle.”
Season 2 of ‘House of the Dragon’ was green-lit last August, just days after the series premiere.
A release date for the new season hasn’t been confirmed. In October, HBO executive Casey Bloys told Vulture: “Don’t expect it in ‘23, but I think sometime in ‘24.”
New and returning cast and crew
Emmy-winning director and executive producer Alan Taylor will be joining the crew for season 2, having previously directed multiple episodes for ‘Game of Thrones’.
The main cast from season 1 is expected to return, including Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Eve Best, Steve Toussaint, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn-Carney, Sonoya Mizuno, and Rhys Ifans.
In addition, Harry Collett, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Phia Saban, Jefferson Hall, and Matthew Needham are also coming back.
Will future seasons be shorter than season one?
While nothing has been confirmed, George R.R. Martin, the author of the ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ novels on which both ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘House of the Dragon’ are based, expects the series to be four seasons long.
“It is going to take four full seasons of 10 episodes each to do justice to the Dance of the Dragons, from start to finish,” he wrote in a blog post last October.
So far, no upcoming seasons have been green-lit, and despite Martin’s wish that each season of the series contains 10 episodes, an HBO spokesperson confirmed to Deadline last month that season 2 will be two episodes shorter, with eight episodes.
However, it has yet to be confirmed if this will be the case for future seasons.
