Ahead of the 30th anniversary of the murder of Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend, Ronald Goldman, a new documentary chronicles the life of O.J. Simpson’s ex-wife - and looks back at her gruesome death and what came next.

A four-part series, The Life & Murder of Nicole Brown Simpson premieres on Lifetime today. It features interviews with dozens of people who knew Brown Simpson, chiefly her three sisters Denise, Dominique and Tanya.

O.J. acquitted of murder, but found liable in civil suit

On 12 June 1994, Brown Simpson and Goldman were stabbed to death outside her Los Angeles home, in an attack so brutal that she was almost decapitated.

Simpson, whose marriage to Brown Simpson had ended two years earlier, was charged and tried for the murders, but was acquitted in October 1995, following a high-profile, 11-month court case dubbed ‘the trial of the century’. In 1997, however, he was found liable for Brown Simpson and Goldman’s deaths in a civil suit brought by the victims’ families.

Simpson, who later spent nearly nine years in prison after being convicted of armed robbery in 2008, died of cancer in April, at the age of 76.

Lifetime doc to allow Nicole’s “voice to be heard”

“This documentary provides an opportunity for Nicole’s own narrative and voice to be heard in one of the most notorious crimes and trials in history,” reads Lifetime’s synopsis of the series. “The project features 50 participants, including those who knew Nicole the best - her friends and family - to shed new light on her life and tragic death. With unprecedented access to exclusive home videos and interviews, the documentary reveals shocking new details in the tragic story.”

Part of Lifetime’s Stop Violence Against Women campaign, The Life & Murder of Nicole Brown Simpson discusses the domestic abuse she suffered at Simpson’s hands during their relationship, having first met the NFL player-turned-actor in Beverly Hills in 1977. In 1989, four years after they got married, he pleaded no contest to a charge of spousal battery.

Denise Brown, who is now a prominent public speaker on domestic abuse, told the Hollywood Reporter: “There’s a whole new generation to educate when it comes to the issues of domestic violence and things that happened to Nicole.”
