Today’s the day. It’s Monday 6 May and the fashion world awaits the traditional MET Gala with all the glitz and glamour that naturally goes along with it. New York City never sleeps and Vogue’s event takes centre stage for what is branded “Fashion’s grand soirée,” as luminaries from across the spectrum – visionary designers, burgeoning talents, runway icons, A-list luminaries, and titans of the industry – gather.

How can I watch the 2024 Met Gala red carpet?

Ahead of the gala, which gets underway at 6 p.m. ET / 3 p.m. PT at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, celebrities and others connected with the fashion world will be out on the red carpet, showing off their best sides, if not all sides, to the assorted cameras. The whole event will be streamed live on Vogue’s official website (www.vogue.com), and you can also follow everything as it happens on their social media platforms: Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. Entertainment channel E! provides another option of the gala live.

If you miss the chance to see it live, Vogue will be publishing several photo galleries with images showing red carpet looks, gala highlights, interviews and reels, afterwards.

Who will host the 2024 Met Gala?

With the exception of 1996 and 1998, Vogue’s Anna Wintour has overseen the Met Gala annually since 1995, often accompanied by a roster of co-hosts. In the upcoming 2024 iteration, Zendaya, Jennifer López, Bad Bunny, and Chris Hemsworth serve as co-Chairs, while Jonathan Anderson, the creative force behind Loewe, and TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew hold honorary chair positions.

How much is a ticket to attend the MET gala?

The gala stands as one of New York City’s premier charitable affairs, as evidenced by the staggering $17.4 million raised for the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute in 2022. To secure a coveted spot on Anna Wintour’s exclusive guest list, tickets can command upwards of $75,000, while seating at a sponsored table may surpass $300,000. Attendees must also adhere to a stringent no-mobile-phones policy enforced by organizers to prevent the unauthorized dissemination of images and videos on social media platforms.

Held annually on the first Monday of May, the Met Gala boasts a near-impeccable attendance record since its inception in 1948, with only a handful of exceptions. In 1991, the gala was sidelined due to the Costume Institute’s lack of an exhibit. Similarly, the 2000 event was called off following the cancellation of a Chanel exhibit, and in 2002, the gala was halted in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The 2020 edition met a similar fate, succumbing to the global Covid lockdown.

What is the theme and dress code for the 2024 Met Gala?

This year, the theme “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” is set to debut with the inauguration on 10 May. Embracing the official dress code of “The Garden of Time,” inspired by J.G. Ballard’s evocative 1962 short story, Vogue interprets this as a floral tapestry, welcoming anything blooming, including real flowers.

According to Vogue, the exhibition will showcase approximately 250 rare artifacts sourced from the Costume Institute’s archives. Spanning over 400 years of fashion history, these pieces include iconic designs by luminaries such as Schiaparelli, Dior, and Givenchy, alongside a 17th-century English Elizabethan-era bodice. Some delicate artifacts, unfit for wear, will be presented through AI-generated video animations or other sensory experiences. Meanwhile, modern counterparts, echoing the essence of the spotlighted fashions, will be divided into three thematic realms: Land, Sea, and Sky.

Since 1973, each Met Gala has adhered to a thematic framework, yielding memorable motifs throughout its storied history. From the opulent “Romantic and Glamorous Hollywood Design” in 1974 to the culturally rich “The Manchu Dragon: Costumes of China, the Chi’ng Dynasty” in 1980 and the avant-garde “Cubism and Fashion” in 1998, the gala has consistently pushed the boundaries of sartorial storytelling.
