How Dwayne Johnson and Adele’s surprise meeting came together
The two finally met during the opening segment of Sunday’s Grammy Awards, with Johnson noting he went to great lengths to keep things under wraps.
Adele’s dream to meet Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson finally came true during Sunday’s Grammy Awards in Los Angeles.
The moment, which was one of the highlights of the telecast, was orchestrated by host Trevor Noah, who made the introduction during his opening monologue.
“This is one of the strangest thing I’ve found out. The person that Adele has wanted to meet, but never has is Dwayne Johnson,” said Noah, as Adele nodded her head in agreement. “You’ve never met him.”
Noah then joked that while he didn’t have someone called “Dwayne Johnson” there, he did have someone called “The Rock”, with the former WWE star then making his way up behind Adele’s seat, before she stood up and the pair hugged.
“Adele meet The Rock, The Rock meet Adele! For the first time ever!” Noah said. “All right, you two get acquainted, we gotta keep the show moving!”
Johnson explains how the surprise happened
Johnson says he knew Adele was a fan of his given she’s stated it publicly before, which pushed him to do something special for her.
“We wanted to do something special for Adele,” Johnson told Variety. “I know that she is a very big fan of mine and has made that clear publicly many times. But I’ve got to tell you, I am a huge fan of hers, as well — her music, her journey, her openness and directness in how she speaks. I’ve always admired that about her.”
Johnson has been in production for his upcoming movie ‘Red One’, which put his Grammys appearance in doubt. However, once he confirmed his attendance to the Grammys, the idea of surprising Adele was pitched to him by the telecast’s executive producer, Ben Winston.
“We were trying to figure out something to do that was going to be fun and surprise her, and we had kicked around ideas all week,” Johnson said. “The key to a surprise like that is to actually keep it a surprise.
“Myself and the Grammys went to great lengths to make sure that Adele was authentically surprised in the moment, and she was.”
Adele and Johnson almost met in 2021
In December 2021, Adele said she would cry if she ever met Johnson. Although she had been living in Beverly Hills for several years, the two had never crossed paths.
Winston tried to orchestrate a meeting between Adele and Johnson during her ‘One Night Only’ concert at the Griffith Observatory, and while those plans didn’t pan out, he did send her flowers.
“I was the biggest wrestling fan when I was younger,” she said during an appearance on NikkieTutorials. “He sent me flowers the other day because he and his wife couldn’t make my show. Literally, I nearly fell off my chair!”
