Over the last two decades, one of the most successful actors in Hollywood has been Mahershala Ali. Born Mahershalalhashbaz Gilmore (1974) in Oakland, California, he is one of the most prominent names in the world of acting.
As IMDB explains, his name comes from the Book of Isaiah (chapter 8, verse 3) in the Old Testament. It is the longest proper name in the Bible and is actually a combination of four words: “Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz”, which means “Hurry to the spoils!” or “He has made haste to the plunder!”.

His college days were away from the spotlight and focused on basketball, a sport in which he excelled playing for the Gaels. Ali’s first performances were at the California Shakespeare Festival and his debut on the small screen came with the role of Trey Sanders in the NBC series ‘Crossing Jordan’ in 2001.
After participating in various series, his first big role came in 2008 with ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’. Following that success, Ali became one of the protagonists of ‘The Hunger Games’, as Commander Boggs. His two most resounding successes were ‘Moonlight’ (2016) and ‘Green Book’ (2018), films for which he won an Oscar and an Golden Globe.
He has also participated in prestigious series such as ‘House of Cards’ or the third season of ‘True Detective’.
Mahershala Ali’s nominations at the Oscars
The Californian actor has twice won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for ‘Moonlight’ (2016) and ‘Green Book’ (2018).
In fact, he treasures a 2-0 on his scoreboard, as he has won all the nominations he has received. He is the only black actor to win twice in the supporting category and the second after Denzel Washington to do so in a row.
He is married and has a son. In 2017 he announced that he had converted to Islam 17 years ago. He is a hip-hop lover and in 2025 he will release the new ‘Blade’ movie in which he will give life to the character formerly played by Wesley Snipes.
