How many Texans have won an Oscar Award and who has won the most?

California and New York are the US states with the most Oscar winners, but what about Texas? Here, we take a look at the Academy Award winners who were born in the Lone Star state.

Another edition of the Oscar Awards is coming up. This Sunday night, 10 March, the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles will host the 96th Academy Awards. As usual, the ceremony will celebrate the achievements of the American cinema industry for the previous year.

The ceremony will begin at 8.00 p.m. ET and will be hosted by comedian Jimmy Kimmel for the fourth time and will feature Mahershala Ali, Emily Blunt, Nicolas Cage, Jennifer Lawrence, Ben Kingsley, Jessica Lange, Charlize Theron and Al Pacino among the presenters.

Providing musical entertainment on the night will be Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell, who are scheduled to deliver a live performance What Was I Made For from Greta Gerwig’s fantasy comedy Barbie. Other performers include Ryan Gosling, Mark Ronson, Becky G, Jon Batiste, Scott George and The Osage Singers.

How many Texans have won an acting Oscar?

More than 3,000 North Americans have won an Oscar since its first edition in 1929. Texas-born artists alone have won eight Academy Awards statuettes. At the 2020 ceremony, Texan Renée Zellweger took home the statuette for Best Actress for her outstanding portrayal of Judy Garland in Judy; adding the second Oscar in her artistic career. She took home the Best Supporting Actress award for her performance in the 2004 movie Cold Mountain.

In addition to Renée Zellweger, other Texans who have won an Oscar include: Joan Crawford for Best Actress in Mildred Pierce (1945), Sissy Spacek for Best Actress in Coal Miner’s Daughter (1980), Tommy Lee Jones for Best Supporting Actor in The Fugitive (1993), Jamie Foxx for Best Actor in the Ray Charles biopic Ray (2004), Forest Whitaker for Best Actor in ‘The Last King of Scotland’ (2006), and Matthew McConaughey for Best Actor in ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ (2013).

Texas is ranked eighth for the US states with the most Oscar Awards, behind New York, California, Illinois, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Ohio.

The 96th Academy Awards will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles on Sunday 10 March 2024. The nominations for all 23 categories were officially announced by the the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) on 23 January.

This year’s event is unusual as a total of six couples have Oscar nominations: Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach (Barbie), Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas (Oppenheimer), Margot Robbie and Tom Ackerley (Barbie), Justine Triet and Arthur Harari (Anatomy of a Fall), Samy Burch and Alex Mechanik (May December) and Jerusha Hess and Jared Hess (Ninety-Five Senses).
