Disney’s ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ has exceeded forecasts and delivered big returns during its opening weekend at the box-office.

The super-hero film is the third instalment in the ‘Ant-Man’ franchise, and Disney had tabbed it to bring in $95 million before the start of the weekend.

Not only did ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ hit that figure, it beat expectations as well, generating $110 million at the domestic box office.

With President’s Day taking place on Monday, the film is expected to bring in between $118 million to $120 million from 4,345 theaters across North America.

Taking into consideration the international box office, the film has brought in $225 million globally despite slightly disappointing numbers in China, where it only brought in $19.2 million.

The film now holds the highest opening weekend of all three ‘Ant-Man’ movies, with the previous two bringing in $57.2 million in 2015 and $75.8 million in 2018 respectively.

‘Ant-Man’ is the first new Hollywood blockbuster out of the gate in 2023,” said Imax’s CEO Rich Gelfond.

‘Ant-Man’ kicks of Phase Five of the MCU

‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ kicks off Phase Five of the MCU and follows Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) as the title character, who dons a supersuit that gives him the ability to shrink or grow.

He is joined by Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) as they explore the Quantum Realm, where they meet Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors).

The new villain is set to play a big role in the MCU moving forward, and is the heir apparent to Thanos.

“This opening definitely reflects interest in where the Marvel Cinematic Universe is going now that Jonathan Majors’ Kang has been fully introduced and there’s a definitive anchor around him and the multiverse,” says chief analyst at BoxOfficePro, Shawn Robbins.

Following ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ Phase Five will continue with ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3′ (May 2023), ‘The Marvels’ (November 2023), ‘Captain America: New World Order’ (May 2024), ‘Thunderbolts’ (July 2024) and ‘Blade’ (September 2024).

‘The Marvels’ was originally slated to be released on July 28, 2023, but Marvel Studios recently pushed it back to November 10.
