How much did it cost to film ‘The Odyssey’? The nine-figure budget Christopher Nolan had to work with

It is the biggest budget the British-American director has worked with throughout his film career, superseding his priciest film, ‘Tenet’.

Update:

Christopher Nolan has never been shy about going big, but with The Odyssey he’s taken that philosophy to an entirely new level. His adaptation of Homer’s legendary epic poem has become the most ambitious project of his career — not just in scale, but in the staggering investment behind it.

Nolan’s largest budget ever

Universal Pictures poured $250 million USD into The Odyssey, making it the most expensive film Nolan has ever directed. The number dwarfs the budgets of his previous blockbusters. Oppenheimer — which won Best Picture at the 2024 Oscars — cost around $100 million. Interstellar came in near $165 million, and Tenet, his priciest film until now, reached $205 million.

The massive budget reflects the sheer scope of the production. Nolan shot the entire movie using 70mm IMAX cameras, making it the first feature ever filmed fully in that format. It’s a technical leap designed to deliver the most immersive image quality possible.

Epic locations, real landscapes

True to his style, Nolan avoided leaning heavily on CGI. Instead, he took the cast and crew across the globe to capture natural environments that mirror Odysseus’ long journey home to Ithaca. Filming took place in Greece, Morocco, Italy, and Iceland — each chosen to evoke the mythic scale of Homer’s world.

The cast is equally star‑studded. Matt Damon leads the ensemble, joined by Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron — a lineup built to match the film’s monumental ambition.

The box‑office test

Now comes the challenge of turning that investment into box‑office success. The Odyssey arrives in theaters with sky‑high expectations and the potential to become one of the defining cinematic events of the year. And once again, Nolan’s name alone is poised to be one of Hollywood’s biggest draws.
